I am a massage therapist, and I use it with/on my clients, 4 legged or 2. I would definitly consider using a massge therapist ,not just for the back pain, but for the temperment issue while in pain or not. Chiropracters are great to use as well as accupuncture. I go to the clients home when the animal is too nervous at the office. The needles do not hurt the animal, so I think your B would be o.k.. Let me know how its going.

I'm curious.. is this the same type stuff as other natural rescue remedies that are 10 - 13% alcohol?
I used a bit w/Keoki, and it worked great, but the alcohol content made me very uneasy, so I stopped.
When I spoke to my vet about it, she asked me where I'd purchased it and immediately contacted the store – it's no longer on their shelves.

The concern is that dogs don't metabolize alcohol in the same way we do, and it can lead to greater problems {sooner than w/humans} if used too often. And the 10 - 13% alcohol base is really quite huge.
You may wind up w/dogs facing liver, pancreas, etc problems down the road, and everyone will be wondering why that happened!

If you do choose to go with such products, do read the full label -- which of course will emphasize the flower extracts --and look for alcohol content. Then use with caution.

  • O- No I think it is. I'm sorry. I just called the 1-800 number on my contact info, and she informed me it's actually 27% from Brandy. She said "that's such a small amount in just a drop or 2". I disagree…. That scares me. I wished I would have known. No wonder you get mellow, your drinking! Sorry about that.

  • Just another thought…...I wish the company would publish that info. I'm not using that on my animal clients again. I'll just trust my ability to calm through healing touch.

yeah, it seems to me, on the one that I used, the alcohol wasn't even listed in the ingredients, which is why I didn't notice until I had it home.
I noticed that later, elsewhere on the bottle.

I think Andrea, here on the forum, was the one who made a comment that had me go looking more closely at the bottle!

  • I should add - when my vet contacted the store at which I bought mine, they said, "Oh yes! We sell a LOT of that here".

    ugh.

  • ugh-I hear ya…scary

Isn't the fact about the alcohol on the labeL? I think it is…? many of the BACH products have alcohol in them...

it may be on the label - I used a different product so cannot say – but it's sure not listed on the website in the list of ingredients. The website is all about the herbs. It's misleading at best for people who order from them.

And 27%!!! That's absurd! My gosh -- it's almost 1/3 alcohol!! Who wouldn't feel relaxed?

Interesting and you are right, it is not on the BACH website for the ingredients, however if you go like to drugstore.com the ingredients are there… and yup... 27%

  • My 12 year old boy injured his back, pinched nerve, a couple of years ago, jumping off a chair, and was hobbling around. We used steriods, muscle relaxers and pain meds, they recommended crate rest and we got a crate in the middle of the living room and tried it for one day, ha, but he was so drugged all he did was sleep beside the couch on a floor pillow for 3 or 4 days, my other 2 were very worried about him and stayed close to him. After a week he was much better, we weaned off the meds and he was 95% better. He has had a couple of similar episodes, not as severe, over the last 2 years. they said he has terrible spondylosis of the spine, may have more problems in the future.

We were very fortunate that his pain was not as severe as yours, and our other dogs 'doctored"him. Take it one day at a time, be sure you give all the pain meds he needs for awhile, and take care of your wounds. There aren't many of us who have not been bitten by a hurt or frightened dog over the years! I hope your wife's finger is OK.

  • Mackpack..Your right, take it day by day…The drugs do serve a purpose. They get a "hot" back or very painful back to relax so it can heal. If you think about a board and you drive a nail in it, it stresses the area. Thats what your back does when it has an injury. Unlike the board your back can compensate for the lack of structure over a period of relax and repair time.

BUT you hurt in other places to make up for that lack of support inthe right place. Over time with training of your muscles that support your main structure, you have some stability.

Just keep up the abdominal muscles... that are actually the main support for your "main frame". For a lack of better words. just some thoughts keep in mind there is a lot more to the problem but for some...its true.(not including traumatic injury of course)

  • My wife's hand is worse where she can't bend her finger or lift objects. I finally got her to go to the doctor, they X rayed her hand and asked her how long she has had arthritis!

So this is how she found out she has arthritis at age 48.

It seems that her knuckle where she was bit has an inner infection, no broken bones, they put her hand & finger in a splint. The dog bite did not break the skin, but as any body who has been "really" bitten by a basenji knows they have bone crushing jaws. They leave horrible bruises even if they don't draw blood.

The dog seems all better still, no more pain attacks. While petting him we noticed a scab on his ear after the fight. It goes all the way through his ear. The other dog bit a hole in his ear, when she tried to finish him!

It is my understanding that Dr Gonto can only respond about the protocol to a Vet and can not give advise direct to an owner, so you may want to have your Vet sent that information to him. Or send the lab information and copy your Vet so that he can communicate directly with your Vet if he suggests changes.

Oakley was on the Iams intestinal sensitivity formula because I tried taste of the wild ( of all kinds) and he was still having stool issues, combined with a puppy bout of giardia…he did well on it but I didn't feel good about the ingredients. From there I tried nature variety and he wasn't a fan. He has been sensative stool wise with many of the high quality foods so now we use Fromms and he is terrific. He loves all the varieties ( I mix two kinds at a time..one of their grain free versions with a grain version in order to get a reduced grain diet; stool issues if none or too much!) His weight is steady and his coat has never looked shinier, smoother of softer. Lastly, he loves the taste and I don't have to coax him to eat. I agree with not free feeding OR feeding from the same bowl. Since yours have issues (whether it's weight or sensitivity) knowing when they ate and controlling how much will allow you to better navigate around the health issues and possibly identify the cause of some as well!

I'm really not sure why you care so much as to remind me where my breeder lives or who she is ( as both of us clearly know) . It's a rather insulting innuendo. As mentioned on the forum previously I experienced the hard way about not vaccinating more than one shot… Id rather a breeder teach me not to repeat Mistakes and tell me how to move forward ( which Pat did) Rather then hearing "ive killed my dog" and be chastised, which was what I wa first met with when trying to get guidance! And believe I mentioned in this thread I don't have intentions of giving more than one. As for why I prefer to ask Pat questions ( which really isn't your business) I don't have a great breeder relationship with Oakleys breeder, while I love her dogs...her an I don't get along personality wise. Hope thats enough of a satisfying answer for your obvious itch to know, of which I assume my breeders already told you!

Thanks for the advice. We are now lice free, thankfully. I did some research and it turns out that. Dog lice are a specific species, different from human lice and we cant get them, neither can my cats.(I have two cats) I guess the bird lice are different. I had already given them the frontlin( not actually frontline brand, its called Fipronex, so that they wouldnt catch it. So I was extra worried for no reason. I am not a big fan of chemicals either. Thats why I didnt have Ayo on the regular dosis of frontline but the thing is that we have such a big stray dog problem that , almost every patch of grass in town is flea and tick infested and we end up having to deal with it a lot, so most people use frontline or similar products regularly. I didnt really have that problem with my last dog ( my great dane CHelo). I used to find a couple of ticks on him like once a year and usually they would dissapear with one application instead of having to regularly do preventive treatment with it. I will read up on the natural remedies, maybe I can use them next time without having to use the chemicals. I also read that these lice are very very uncommon in countries like United States or European countries,.. again, its the conditions of all the stray dogs that we have here. Its a shame, and there are a lot of organizations that try to help, but in the end, you know, when you have a lot of people that need aid, its really hard to get aid for animals. Thanks for the help….

Oh, this is tough. I had a b who had back issues and would wake up screaming ever 1hr. We tried everything to control his pain..even morphine patches directly on his skin. We never could get the pain managed. We gave him peace of the rainbow bridge. I am so sorry this isn't more positive.
