Basenji shed, while maybe not as much as other dogs but they do shed and they do have dander… If you live with your Mom, best to find someone that has Basenjis (like a breeder) and have your Mom visit.. and more then once

  • oo okay thank you :)

  • I think they don't "shed" like other dogs in that they don't leave hair all over the floors, but they do leave hair on blankets, black shirts, etc. Some will "blow" once or twice a year, when they get a shaggier look and you have to brush them to get the loose hair out, or when you bathe them there's a lot of hair left in the tub.

But they don't seem to produce the dander that other breeds do, which is what annoys the allergic.

No mammal is going to be completely shed-free. I mean, even humans lose hair!

  • good point and thanks :)

  • Tucker sheds like leaves fall in, well, Fall. However, he ONLY sheds in the summer. It's cold now. His coat is thickening and I swear I can't even PULL hair out of him. Give him a hot summer day and he'll give you a 'drive by shedding'. My bed is literally covered in his short little hairs in just a few days in the summer. I keep a lint roll right next to the bed. He likes to sit on his pillows on his side of the bed and look out the window. I have to roll them daily to keep them looking somewhat hair free.

Did I say 'his side of the bed', well, what I meant was, errr….nevermind... My training is coming along nicely... :p

They do have dander, just not as much as other dogs… and the only way to really know if there are allergies to Basenjis is to visit with them... and/or get someone to give you a sleep blanket that a Basenji uses... and sleep on it.... you will know soon enough....

  • I pet sat a jack russell for about 6 years and I was very allergic to him (but I loved him so much, I still took care of him constantly and he stayed at my house and slept in my bed). Trust me, a thorough cleaning after he went home to his owner, was the only way to get rid of the allergens and the hair (boy do JRs shed!).

I am not allergic to my basenji, Ruby and was not allergic to my brother's basenji, Zeke, that was in the house when I was growing up. I'm also allergic to my friends' golden and to their german shephard. That said, I know of people that are allergic to basenjis.

Best to do what Tanza suggests and have your Mom visit with the basenjis and more than once. :D.

  • well I was really allergic to dogs and cats for the past 10 years which is weird since I had dogs when I was a teenager. I have been wanting a dog forever, and that's how I came across Basenjis they are the the semi hypoallergenic category along with yorkies and poodles. I have to admit that the 1st few weeks my eyes were a bit itchy but i kept at it, and now nothing. THey toatlly went away! even when she sheds a bit I'm perfect. I even used to get rashes if a dog licked me, but not her. So good luck I hope your mom's allergies will be fine. Tell her to stick it out and her body will build up an immunity to the dog

  • :O oo this is good news, okay i will do that :). and yes im deff bringing her with me :). cuz the deal was if she's allergic then we might not b able to get one .

Really is best to do it before… that way you know way before it would be time to bring home a puppy... that would be way heartbreaking... or to bring the pup home and then have to return....

  • good point thanx :)

Thank you for the replies. Yes, either a total scam or just irresponsible, deceptive and lying individuals trying to make a buck. I am so glad I found this forum. Federico

It depends on the cat just as much as it depends on the dog. Does your cat run "prey-like" when frightened? I have 2 cats that have lived with 3 different basenjis. My male cat and my first basenji were pals and often cuddled together. They would wrestle and when the dog got too unruly he'd (the cat) nip him to keep him in line. My female cat ran every time she saw my dog. She was fun to chase and like most basenjis: "thing move, I chase thing!" Cody never ever hurt them and recognized that they were part of his "pack" (for lack of a better term). Cat outside? FORGET IT! He never caught one but boy did he try! My cats no longer live with my dogs (I moved and the cats stayed with my parents) and I know my female cat is much happier. Elliot my 3yr old is OK with my cats but Morgan my 1yr old chases them. Neither try to hurt them but the stress of being chased is a lot for a 15 year old cat to handle. [image: 1469113808168-1003649_10151420270322531_1939276400_n.jpg]

So, the fanconi is on each pups or on the parents or both? I was making some accouints about how much can expect to spent on a future litter.. well here on Mexico.. the people dosnt make hip, eyes or worst.. the fanconi.. but anyway the pups are sell for aprox 400 us.. but there is no explanation about the cost.. I think there is no need to put on the account the food of the parents, electricity and so .. because the parents food are responsible of the owner.. i dont expect that someone pay for the cost to me to have an basenji.. but well there are other cost that i see is ok to include.

@Kipawa: I think most people will agree that neutering a dog does not spoil their spirit or temperament. More often, spaying or neutering results in a more calm, balanced animal. I agree, but we have lots of people on the Forum from over the "pond" and they have most different ideas about spay/neuter, different culture, different ideas…. and that is their right.... sometimes we all will need to agree to disagree..

But the part that you highlighted about in season bitches is not likely to occur at a dog show. I do not allow other dogs at shows to lick my dogs nor do I allow my dogs to lick other dogs at a show. I have not seen any study that shows that an in season bitch is at significantly higher risk than any other dog at a dog show. If you are taking reasonable precautions with your dogs while at a show, I don't see that they are any more likely to contract an infection than the other dogs at the show. Actually, this past year I bred a bitch who came into season early and specifically asked my repro vet about bringing her to show because it would break the major if she did not show. My repro vet said that it was fine as long as I took reasonable precautions like using a crate and not allowing her to explore the grounds with her nose in everything. She whelped a healthy litter of 4.

@agilebasenji: So Breeder A said Breeder B didn't test? Personally, I'd do some homework before I'd believe what Breeder A said about Breeder B. Maybe it's true, and if it is SHAME on Breeder B! But I've learned that just because 2 people breed basenjis, doesn't mean they like each other. (And just for the record, I have no idea who Breeder A and Breeder B are.) Exactly…. and it is easy enough to check on the OFA site or Sally's pedigree site (of course that is not updated until OFA site is updated). But never go on what "he said/she said"... at least I don't... but there has been much discussion on other lists about well know breeder not testing or doing a questionable breeding with tested dogs... all pretty easily documented on the OFA site. So in some cases could be "he said/she said" with no truth to the statements..... as said, best and the responsible thing to do is check out your facts.
