Capt. Jack For Sale

  • Your name: Kira and Geoffrey Hayes
    Your city, state:Groton, Connecticut
    Your phone number: 740-334-9321
Basenji(s) For Sale:1 Red and White Male (nurtered) with special needs
    Age of Basenji(s): 5/6 years
Price: Make an Offer (or free if needed to be shiped)
Do you ship your Basenjis: I cant pay for it

We have had Jack for over a year, but recently had a baby. Since the baby has been here, he has been growling at, and occasionally nipping at any strangers (only in our house not when we are anywhere else). He needs a home with no children in my opinion, even though he's showed NO aggression towards children. He doesnt like cats or non nurtered male dogs. Other than that he is house trained and a WONDERFUL dog. (doesnt crate) I want him to go to a great home. He also has lyme disease, but we had him on medication for it and now he hasnt had any signs of it in over eight months. His shots are all updated.

  • Have you contacted BRAT?

  • Talked to someone from BRAT and because he doesnt crate they told me that we should try other options first. And the person I talked to was kind of rude too!

  • @Capt_Jack_our_Basenji:

Great  ….maybe someone here can pull some BRAT strings....

  • I am really glad you decided to look into this option. Please make sure there wherever you decide to place Jack, it is a family that has experience with Basenjis, or another "challenging" breed of dog. Otherwise, he is going to have the same problems in a new home.

Good luck <hugs>I know how hard this is for you…you are doing a really brave, and kind thing for Jack.</hugs>

  • I agree, you really are doing what is the kind thing for Jack….. Kudos... and I too hope that someone here involved with BRAT can pull some strings... certainly 90% of the B's that are in BRAT are most likely not crate trained...

  • I am sorry the BRAT person you spoke to was rude.
Having seen all your post, I know what care you have put into this basenji, and how hard this was for you.
I am hopeful you can go to the BRAT site, list your basenji on the computer and let everyone who does this type of rescue help you.
You can contact me privately for the BRAT site..

  • Kira, I know this was a really hard, heart felt decision but I definitely think you are doing a courageous and good thing for Jack and for your family. I agree with what Andrea & Pat are saying regarding BRAT…many of the dogs on their website either have trouble with crate training or can't be crated, so I'm sorry that you were given a hard time about Jack's crate training. Hopefully someone here can help out with getting him into BRAT...hang in there. Kim

  • I filled out all the information about Jack on their website. Im waitng to hear from (hopefully) someone else. I was Surprized at the rude person, lol. She acted like I was giving up on Jack and wasnt trying hard enough. Made me feel like I should have never called. But maybe she was having a bad day…We will see where this all goes. Ive contacted a breeder around here as well. We are heartbroken about not having our B around so we are looking into getting a puppy and starting fresh. My mom is a trainer with experience with mainly skipperkee's but shes trained B's and some problem breeds as well and she is planning on coming here to CT when we get a new puppy to help us. I think by getting a puppy from a breeder will lessen the possibility of getting in this situation again. And I can have more control over the early training. (plus my life without a Basenji would be...well, pointless!! hahaa. I just wish It's Still be with my Jackers...........)

  • I am glad you put Jack on the BRAT website, and again, I am sorry your were not treated well.
We are all non paid, and I try very hard to be kind to everyone I come into contact with..
But lets see how we can help you rehome your boy…
I have to say, and I am saying this out of total kindness...
You need to focus on your baby and family right now.
You sure don't need a puppy of any breed to tend.
Having this lovely child will take all your time and energy for a few years...
but once your ready, I do hope we can help you find a basenji for your home...one that like children!

  • I agree with Sharron… right now you should concentrate on the baby and the family... there will be lots of time for a puppy when things are not so confusing....

  • I should add that I think you are a great B home and when the time is right, you will know regardless if you get a pup or another rescue…

  • Yes, Pat is right, we can help you once your family is less busy and your not so sleep deprived.
We are all here to help you with an new basenji, be it rescue, or pup, but please, make sure you have time to devote to this pup…like you would to a child...
2 legs or 4, they all need to be babied until they are growm....
    ...

    Double ditto!

  • Have to agree with what Sharon, Andrea & Pat have already said…hold off on getting a pup until you have more time and enjoy the baby time with Aiden. I think the other thing, is that if you introduced a pup even within 6 months, Aiden will still be baby and the puppy will already grow to adult or near adult by the time Aiden is a toddler. An adult might not be as tolerant of a toddler pulling (ears & tails) & poking. Just a thought.

  • Thanks!!!!

  • :D So we decided we are going to keep Jack we found a behaviorist with some interesting ideas on how we can train Jack. And he is doing GREAT, in fact I had a few friends over yesterday and we were ALL playing with Jack and Aiden and had NO problems!! (Jack got into the bathroom trash but thats normal @@) I'm VERY excited about not having to let Jack go…Im really hoping this works because so far (knock on wood) thing are going GREAT! I wanted to thank you all for the support and I promise to let you ALL know whats going on and how things are progressing!! IM EXCITED!!!!:D

  • That is great! Share with us what is working!

  • Oh Kira ! That is wonderful news!
I know you were just sick at the thought of giving him up.

Do share what the tips/methods are that you're using.

  • Great news…can't wait to hear what the behaviorist recommended that is helping things at your house. Fantastic! :D

Folks, This thread has been closed, pending review and moderation. Please respect our forum community rules and guidelines. If you feel that you need stop posting for a while because of a conflict with other members, please step back and email us directly before posting publicly about the issue. Best way to to handle arguments on the public forum is to just let go and move on. http://www.basenjiforums.com/showthread.php?t=374 COURTESY AND RESPECT The purpose of this board is to provide a place for Basenji owners to make connections, exchange information and assist and encourage one another. It is above all a friendly environment for online discussion. Don't be rude to others, or make an argument personal If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all Know the difference between a difference of opinion and a personal attack Don't try to "win" an argument by repeating yourself over and over Don't tell others what to post Don't bash other members Keep it clean, don't use profanity Why can't I tell this user what an idiot he/she is; every single thing he/she posts is just so wrong? If you can't find a respectful way to express your difference of opinion, then you're better off saying nothing at all. Don't talk down to other posters, lecture them or be rude and dismissive. Disagreement is fine, but attacking another poster personally will get you in trouble and result in a ban from the forum. But he started the fight by attacking me! Can't I defend myself? This is a forum for the discussion of Basenjis, not a dueling society. If you feel attacked, please report it to the admin and then ignore the poster, respond to another thread. Remember, however much you were provoked, if you attack a poster personally then you are just as guilty of breaking the rules. Why can't I tell a poster that he's breaking the rules? This board has a moderator. Telling other people what to do is rude, derails the conversation even further and often ignites flame wars. Please just report the user to the admin and move on.

@sharronhurlbut: Pat, I am not a "fan" of low cost spay/neuter places either…BUT IMO, they are less of a risk than having an intact basenji placed in the general public. I will post an article I just received re pet owners and getting their pets fixed in my next post. Re this note, to me, having the dog fixed at one of these places is the lesser of 2 evils. Yeah…what she said!

@bellabasenji: It all boils down to what is better for the (so called)"breeders" wallets!!! UUuuugh… BYB's & millers!!! That is true, a pure for profit breeder is not going to spend money on health testing that is going to cut into their bottom line. They will do as little testing as they can do and still sell puppies. Educating as many people as possible to demand health testing for both parents is the best thing that we can do for the breed. There will always be some who want a puppy "right now" and won't care but the more people we can educate the smaller the market for puppy mill dogs because really most people do want to do the right thing and want a healthy puppy that will be a long lived companion.
