Basenjis descended from what???

Basenji Talk
  • I've decided that Basenjis must have really descended from some subterranean burrowing animal and not wolves! If we are watching TV, Cory will either burrow under the throw or bury her head in an armpit, under a leg, or even between 2 sofa back cushions. If she dozes in my lap, she'll bury her head under my arm. When I let her in our bed early in the morning, she immediately burrows under the covers to sleep against our lower backs or behind our knees. If the bed is made, she'll burrow between the pillows stacked against the headboard. The only time she doesn't bury her head to sleep is if there is nothing available to cover it. I think she is part gopher!:D

  • Is it coincidence that other little burrowing critters are called Prairie DOGS? ha! ;)

  • Yeah! Cory seems to really have the burrowing down to an instinctive art. LOL - Duke & Daisy don't display that strong of an urge, but will ALWAYS nose and claw their way under any blanket a human is using. I notice it more lately I think because it's getting pretty cold here in Michigan. I don't keep the heat much above 67 degrees even at night.

  • Well, Cory's cousins here in California also like their head covered. I have always figured they must be part ostrich.

  • Yep…..they are definitely related to Cory!! Those are funny. I like the tail crooked through the laundry basket! Play hard and sleep hard!

  • We have dog snuggle blankets all over the house, the b's are almost always covered when they are not moving…
Its cool up here now, and hubby keeps the house at 65 so blankets or Sally Wallis sweaters are the norm for my 2 b's.

  • After watching Meerkat Manor and then watching my Bs, I think they are related:D

  • @Punky:

After watching Meerkat Manor and then watching my Bs, I think they are related:D

That's it!!!! They are just bigger Meerkats - they groom, they burrow, they huddle with the pack, and some (Cory included) even stand on their hind legs to check things out. Truth be known, they probably wouldn't mind eating bugs. And notice on Meerkat Manor - it is the females who rule the place and have the most disagreements within the pack. Their facial expressions are even similar. Definitely Meerkats.

  • Hollie buries her face… but I think it's because her nose stays so COLD!!

@planetsaver said in Basenji for me or not ?: Will be a problem to leave him alone, let's say 10 days / month an average of 9 hours a day. Also I do not want to have to much trouble with the neighbours, but I understand he can make some noise sometimes, maybe he can be trained to stay alone and not to bark that much. Why would you even think about training a hunting hound to stay home alone ? I would never let my Basenjis alone for more than 4 hours, and even that is very rare. 3 hours is absolute maximum. Like @tanza, I have sold puppies into apartment environments as long as all other boxes ticked positive. Someone there all the time, proper attention to training, not just leaving the dog alone, especially not as a puppy. btw, he won't bark at all. As you would know if you had really researched the breed. He will cry and scream but not bark ! No. At least you are asking questions but I really think you should find another breed.

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

My Basenji Billy is quite undershot; he's a purebred, his bottom jaw just didn't stop growing when it was supposed to. That's okay, I'm a bit of a sucker for a dog with an underbite anyway.:) He was my first rescue Basenji.

@Thana: she does have basenji characteristics then apart from her colours and looks.- i also think she must have some basenji blood! She is lovely and lucky no matter what! adorable little face:))))) Having read about the characteristics I think she does. The lady with the basenji that we met also commented on some of the things she was doing as "very basenji" (eg. standing on her back legs so she could see what was going on). Has a lovely wrinkly forehead too. Got very frustrated with me earlier and did her funny bark, more of a wierd howl really. She is def one of a kind. Its a shame we have to have her spayed (not that I could ever justify letting her have a litter).

OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
