  • Wow this stuff is amazing…they eat stuff like chicken & rice with veggies?!?! I dont even eat half this stuff. They eat some healthy stuff. They don't eat dog food? Sorry if thats a dumb question. I dont own one yet I am just researching. Is this the bananas, melons, peas and all that stuff a part of their normal diet or is that only on special occasions?

  • I give it to my guys as treats, more than biscuits and cookies

  • o ok, I was starting to think that they dont eat dog food at all

  • Some people do cook for their dogs or feed raw, when my guys are out of dog food and the shipment hasn't arrived yet I do cook for them and they love it

  • The quality of food is very important regardless of the breed of dog… and many people do not use dog food, but either use a raw diet (that includes raw meaty bones, bones and all, which are safe unless cooked).. and many cook for their dogs. If you use commercial dog food, be sure to use a high quality, it costs a little more but you feed less and they get more benefit from it... I have always given my fruits and Veggies.. raw, cooked .... rice is a good filler for them... pumpkin has many health benefits for dogs...

  • Sahara loves the commercial Chicken Jerky for dogs. Does anyone here have a recipe for Jerky for pets? I think I can dry it myself cheaper than what it cost. The good brand is expensive and she loves it.

  • There is a recipe on another thread-I tried it (the recipe) and it was very good-for both dogs and my husband  and his friend:eek: !!:D

I like beef jerky! if you get like chuck roast on sale at coborns or your local grocer. You have them cut it into jerky strips *like an 1/8 or 1/10 of an inch. then you dip it in soy sauce and put it on the dehydrator.

Cook it for 2-4 hours. it will just be a little red inside when its done. but you can see its brown on top.

I LOVE IT and my dogs go CRAZY for it! its very recommened by me and my basenji! lol

  • Paco eats Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lover's Soul usually, and will move up to the Dog Lover's Soul when he's a year old. On occasion, the store is out of his food and we either cook him some boneless chicken or give him raw beef - he's also a huge fan of eggs, more cooked than raw, though he'll eat it either way.

@Saving said in Anal Gland Health Diet Adjustment (ideas?): scavenging on walks has increased though and that's quite annoying. LOL, omgosh! The amount of food tossed on the ground is astounding! And doodle will grab it up before I have any idea it's there! I wish I had a picture of the day she pulled a (whole) bagel out of a bush!

Not sure how Xylitol is being marketed. It is an alcohol found in a lot of plants, including birch wood, which is the source of Xylitol used in medicines. And it is toxic to dogs, even in small amounts. Most of the time you find it in sugarless gum and candy. Here is an FDA warning "Paws Off Xylitol": https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/paws-xylitol-its-dangerous-dogs

Thank you everybody so much! I appreciate all the info. I had some vanilla Breyer's all natural and gave my guy a taste of that... boy does he seem to think that's a great treat! Obviously, though I don't want that to be the only thing I do. I'm going to follow up with our vet on getting a draw for the full thyroid panel at hemopet once next pay check comes through. You were right he was only checked for T4. Thank again basenji forums! I was looking back at pics from when he was younger and weighed more. I think he's always been a bit taller than standard and had a little barrel chest. Used to call him a basenji bouncer at the dog park. He was all about playing with the labs, pits and other big dogs - probably because he knew he could outrun them if they ever got too rough. He's much more about slow walks with me and lap snuggles these days ❤

I had a somewhat similar experience. Joey had a seizure which I correlate to taking Simparica. He looked terrible so took him to the vet when the first seizure happened and he was late Stage 2. Put him on Royal Canin kidney kibble and Hills kidney wet food and 4 years later he has only had 1 more seizure and his kidney values have remained constant. I will believe your homemade version is most likely better if you have the correct proportions. All the best to your Bs! Joey will be 15 in November.

8 mos old is still on Royal Canine medium size puppy as recommended by vet. Very interested in how you change up their food. Glad to hear that because I would like to change him from chicken based to something else as adult. Had always been advised not to keep changing food as it was hard on their system. Breeder advised to use high protein and fat dog food (60% protein, 30% fat). What is your opinion on this? I am starting to add 1/2 tsp coconut oil daily to dog food for winter feeding. Advised it had ingredients similar to mother's milk. What say you about this?
