Length of Heat Cycle??

Basenji Talk

  • Hey guys.

Kali just went into heat a few days ago, and this is her first heat, so we're all a little confused because we've never had a female dog, let alone a basenji.

We've done some reading, and we've learned that the heat cycle is once a year. But we can't seem to find anything telling us about how long the cycle lasts. So could any of you tell me?

    For Basenjis typically 30 days

  • 30 days? wow thats long.

She's gonna hate us for the next 30 days. we put her in a diaper cause my mom doesn't want to clean up little red dots all over the house. is there an alternative to doggy diapers?

  • I don't know if Cory was the exception but we only needed to put a diaper on her for one week of the heat cycle. This was her first (and last) time going into heat and so maybe it was different. I don't know if their first cycles are exceptionally mild. But she only spotted for one week and then she either didn't spot or kept herself so clean that we didn't notice it. We still kept her away from male dogs and we put old sheets on the sofa and the chairs that she really likes. I was surprised at how little blood there was.

    Spaying…

Also as BasenjiDiva mentioned, the worst bleeding usually only lasts for about half the entire time, or two-ish weeks.

  • Yes, typically Basenji bitches are pretty clean about themselves… but they can "spot" your rugs/furniture for 30 days.. give or take... the worst bleeding does usually only last for 1/2 the time.... but know that they are "able" to be bred anytime during that time.... depending on the bitch...

Personally I never worried about the spots... mine would never wear the "britches".... so I just had the rugs clean after it was over.. of course I had up to 4 at one time in season

  • I found that when Sugar had her first cycle she bled a LOT! Damisi is in her first cycle and she bled for about 1 week and a half and then eased up. Then she just had another two days of heavier bleeding before it slowed again.

  • I used to put little girl training pants on my girl. You just cut a hole in the rear for the tail. It looked funny but it worked and it was cheaper than the diapers thing

  • little boys underwear and a maxi pad, underwear already has a "tail hole"

  • @WBL:

'cept for the maxi pad will only last about 30seconds, and then will most likely be totally shredded, and possible ingested  usally directly in front of your in-laws

Ahh…how lovely living with such devilish little dogs ;)

  • I never bother with "diapers" or "panties" for my girls when they are in season. They keep themselves so clean that there is rarely any spotting in the house. If they do spot any, the boys are more than eager to clean the area.

@zande - And why I have two bitches...LOL! Or only neutered males if I have one.... while neutered males can have "safe sex".... solves the problem of unwanted litters!

Hello All! Well were in day 6 of her 1st season and things are going really well with the doggie diapers (to my surprise), she wears them without problem…I think perhaps the actual ones designed for dogs may work slightly better or she just doesn't mind. They may have a different shape to them that helps them stay on, the tail hole is in a perfect spot. She is very tired and quite loving. Her "girl parts" got quite big over the past few days and nipples have doubled in size (hope they go back down). Me and my GF can't wait for this to be over! Scarlett was born in September so I guess her mom (Therese and Kevin's Karma...dad was Sober) had to have a similar cycle. Been busy but will try to post Scarlett diaper pics soon!

@Andrew: As far as diapers go, my breeder recommended this, as basenjis are quick to tear them off and the cost can add up. Buy the smallest size boy's toddler underpants you can find. Cut a hole for the tail. Put a pantyliner in. I bought a 5 pack last year, and since you can custom cut the hole, it stays on a little better. I got the 2T size & had to safety pin it so it wouldn't fall off of Callie, but it was $3 for 5 & well worth it. Thanks so much. I had another friend recommend this as well. Maya still tried to chew them, but it's much easier on the pocket book : )

@LeeL: We live in NC which is a little cooler, but I have seen my basenjis laying in the sun when it is 100F or when it is 40F. We can't leave them in the house all day due to destruction, but a laundry room they can go into with a dog door as well as a seperate room in the garage with a dog door. Plus we have a table with umbrealla on teh deck and they will move between full sun and any of those areas when they feel like it. Even when we are home all day they alternate between inside and outside in teh sun. I have the same setup. I keep Buddy, 8 months old outside with the dog door blocked as he would be destructive inside while the weather is mild. Come winter I will have to just let him have access to the laundry room only as that's where the dog door enters and keep the laundry room door to the rest of the house closed. There's also a door going into the garage.

LOL I often bring warm laundry up from the basement & fold it on the bed. When I dump the pile of warm clothes on the bed I am guaranteed to have 2 Basenjis in the middle of the pile. Also, we just moved into a new house with heat registers on the floor. This is Jibini's FIRST encounter with such a thing; every other house we've been in had them on the ceiling. I was waiting to see how long it would take him to catch on….for about a week he persisted in his usual warmth-seeking behavior (cuddling with me on the couch). But on a particularly cold night he was walking by the living room heat register and he stopped in his tracks, did an about face and stood looking at the register in disbelief. Initially he kept standing & rotating so as to "warm" his whole body....then he curled up for a nap in front of the register. Silly dogs!!
