Introducing Dakota

  • Hi:
We just adopted little Dakota she is about 5 months old and we were originally told she was a Sheppard lab mix. I think they have it all wrong. I think she is part basenji and then maybe a bit Sheppard. She has the white sox’s and white tipped tail. She has the wrinkled forehead (my pics do not show this well). We live in S Florida I have a DD 3 yrs old and expecting another girl January 2nd. Here is one picture the rest were posted on the other thread. I need to get some better ones.

  • She is very cute! Good for you for adopting her. Where abouts in FL are you? We are in Tampa and get together with other basenjis and their humans on a regular basis.

A good vet is a good vet even if they aren't "basenji experts"! The good ones will be willing to learn about the breed but at the end of the day, a basenji is still a dog. ANY dog can be quirky!! My vets never saw basenjis before mine and I've had zero issues. They are patient, kind people who care about their patients. (My dogs are show dogs and very easy patients though! used to standing still while someone examines them). A good vet will be willing to listen to you! Ask local friends where they go and get a few recommendations. REMEMBER!!!!!!! It's 100% OK to decide a vet isn't the right fit. There is no shame in shopping around! Don't keep going to a place you don't love. It's up to you to train your new baby to be OK with being handled/examined. Work on playing with paws, opening their mouth, gentle restraint, etc. I also belive that muzzle training is a good idea. If your dog (any breed!!!!) is ever hurt/painful they might try to bite the vet OR you so having them used to a muzzle is a wonderful thing. Make it positive so going to the vet is no big deal! Good Luck with your baby!

Remember, a tired Basenji is a good Basenji… and also it is much harder to introduce a puppy to olders in the house... I would guess while you think he is "after" them... he just wants to play... you have to that that position... if they don't want to play with him.... Puppies play hard... usually adults will correct wild childs play... but they still need an outlet for all their built up energy...

Hi Sharon; sorry this has taken me so long to get back, I am a home health caregiver and work 12 hour shifts so time schedules are often tight. This forum is one of my pleasurable moments. Anyway….to answer your question, we got our Basenji's from a breeder in Buffalo Minnesota (female) and Minneapolis Minnesota (male). Sorry, don't remember the breeders names.
