Hello, My name is Gina, and I am new to this site. I was just looking for new friends to chat with about our basenji's. My family rescued one from a rescue shelter in York NE a year ago, and she has been the best dog for me. I could'nt have custom ordered a dog more perfect than my sally. Unfortunatly i am having issues trying to upload a photo of her to this site, but hopefully soon you'll be able to see her precious face on here! My husband also has a AKC lab named Mason. I love how calm and laid back Sally is unless she sees a critter outside. I love to hear her talk, and she is soooo curious! She makes so much noise while playing with Mason she sounds so mean but she is just all noise. She has been dog aggressive with strange dogs, so i feel lucky she is soo godd with Mason. She is WONDERFUL with my 2 soon to be 3 year old son Owen. :p She let's him climb all over her, she's always giving him kisses and wanting to sit by him. She has caught numerous critters in the backyard and brought them to the back door for me to find… and she amazes me with how quiet, and how she stalks like a cat, she licks herself like a cat, and can squeeze into the smallest spaces! I think she is a cat in dog's clothing.
My other hobbies are: photography, sewing, reading, muscle cars, movies, music, dog grooming/training, dog walking, shopping, playing with Owen my son, and spending time with family.

Welcome to the forum. Sorry you're having difficulty finding a pup. There is an imbalance between people looking for a Basenji puppy and available puppies. Basenjis don't have large litters, there aren't a ton of breeders, and there is only one heat a year. As a consequence the supply is somewhat limited. Plus, as I'm sure you're aware, breeding takes a lot of time, effort, and money. It's a labor of love more than anything. That said, I'd be quite confident that you'll be able to find a puppy. As I'm sure you know from experience, most conscientious breeders care where their pups land. In your case that's a good thing because there is a chance you'll have your dog compete, which most would find desirable. As for not being sure what a win looks like, judging is subjective. A loser on day one can win breed and class on day two. (Not only with dogs. I was reading today about how SnapChat has "pretty filters" that always turn eyes blue). It's easier of where the competition is performance based.

She's still not too sure about water & I think it's because I've been using the water bottle to discourage inappropriate behavior :)

Welcome, and 'ditto' Janneke on the stories. I'm clueless when it comes to the racing aspect–-actually I'm clueless on many aspects, but racing is a big DUH?!?! moment for me.

I believe everyone should go to a dog show once and just watch the breed or breeds they are interested in. This will show you another element of the breed. Arlene
