How do you train NOT to mark in other peoples' homes?

    I have had issues with both Tayda and Lenny peeing on other peoples' carpets when we go to visit. Any advice on how to curb this? I just came back from a friends and I had to watch them both like hawks the whole time. Tayda has done it twice and Lenny has done it once (not all at once, over about a year). I like taking them with me places but obviously they will be less welcomed by my friends if they are known for peeing on carpet.

    Have you tried making sure they empty before they go in? Or maybe bring some of their own blankets and spread them on the floor? Keep them right with you until you are pretty sure they will be responsible? Bring some Nature's Miracle and paper towels :)

    yep, always make sure they go before we go in… and when they do go, its not much. i threw my jacket on the floor hoping they'd just sit on it, which is what they do if i leave my clothes on the floor at home, but they were too interested in sniffing around. i did keep them close to me the whole time, this last place we went there used to be a resident cat in the place, so it was driving them nuts to not be able to sniff where ever they wanted. j

    it just got a bit distracting and interruptive for me to keep calling their names while trying to watch t.v. or have a conversation with my friends....

    Pretty typical… new place "mine".... I remember following mine around for hours when we would stay at a hotel/motel when on the road for shows...

    I worry about the same thing too. I took chance to a family get-together and he thought it would be nice to "mark" someones purse. Not good :(
    Now I watch him like a hawk. If he is on the ground…anything can happen.
    I take him out twice as much if we are staying somewhere and it works.

    Someones purse… eek! ha ha. One of my friends came over today with her new little min pin puppy. He is very much still in potty training mode and Tayda and Lenny were very nice playing with him even though they were 10 times his size. The puppy peed on my kitchen floor...like 5 drops cause he is so little. Lenny promptly went over and peed on his pee... but his was like a WATERFALL! Ack! Ahhh.... dominance haggling at its best...

    I'm just glad Lenny has been playing so nicely with other dogs. This dog is the first dog that has come over in a LONG time cause I've been scared of what Lenny would do based on his previous performance at the dog park. But he is learning his manners now! Yay!

    I just recently had chance around a toddler and he did great. They were eye level and chance would walk right up to her face and give her a wet kiss. Ha!

The person with the degree may have just scraped by with a C+, while the person who devoted decades may have been under the tutelage of a Master Artist. And really, if you are planning to purchase such a prized piece of Art, shouldn't you educate yourself so you can make an intelligent decision instead of allowing others to tell you what to buy? As an aside: The original YouTube link remains, but we certainly do not need her entire catalog of videos. Sharing information is one thing, advertising for someone is another. I would hope that you understand that not everything you see online is true. Including claims to be an expert, certified, trained, Dr., etc., etc. Lots of people in the world are just selling a story.

    I also have a Verizon air card USB - the video may use it all up. Also, instead of using the laptop with the air card, I used my home computer to call it up and found you have to subscribe to something in order to watch - it's my policy not to do that. So, even though the video may be great, you do have to sign up with something to do so.

    For a teenage boy to be 80% with distractions is great. We're very proud of him and his Mom for doing such a great job with him. His little sisters Olive (aka Fina) and Scarlett will be coming to visit us next week. I hear they are also doing well, in fact I could hear Scarlett barrooing at her dad when he called to tell us they were coming for a visit. The bending thing is a mistake I make frequently so I have to remind myself all the time to watch my posture. Therese

    @tanza: Crate training is something that "if" possible all dogs, not only Basenjis should learn… in your case Shaye's Mom, as you will I am sure read of hear from other Forum members there are some that you can just not crate train.... but the reasons are many, not just house breaking, but a safe place if you are having work done in the house, no worries about someone leaving a door open... work in the yard, no worries about someone leaving a gate open... traveling, all should be confined/restrained when in a moving vehicle, visiting with family/friends... by taking the crate along there is always a place that your dog is familar with and comfortable... Most responsible breeders have usually started crate training before you get your puppy... so usually they are somewhat used to them... however this is one reason I will never ship a puppy as cargo... and people need to personally pick up a puppy... one great way to freak a pup out (in my opinion) is remove them from their litter mates, stuff them in a crate that they have no idea what it is, haul them to the airport to be put in the belly of the plane.... well, you get the idea... Of course that said... there are just some that can't be crate trained and have never had a bad experience You're absoluty correct Pat. I had 3 that I could not for the life of me crate train. Crating would have been wonderful.
