Bright pink TOE - injury?

    I noticed this afternoon that one of Ziggy's toes is bright pink. It's the toe pad, the fleshy area just under the toe nail, which is usually black and slightly crusty. He doesn't seem to be in pain but licked at it a bit earlier. Any ideas what it might be? ~ Lori ~

    Could be most anything, a little cut, a bug bite… etc... don't know if you have fox tails were you live, but they can work their way into the foot pad by getting under the nails...

    I've noticed with Zoey and Tyler that after they've licked their feet, even just a little, the skin looks much brighter pink. This concerned me the first time, but when I saw the skin went back to normal color after they dried off from the licking, I always wait a little while now before getting concerned. Why is the skin usually black and crusty on Ziggy? The crusty part doesn't sound normal to me? Maybe it's a caloused area that he's licked off??

    When I say that the pad is "crusty," that means it's rough and calloused, as dog's feet pads normally get from walking on them, and a little "crusty" or "dirty" as everyday gunk from sidewalks sticks to the pad.

    The toe pad is still somewhat pink today but seems to be returning to its normal color. He's walking normally, doesn't seem to be affected by it, and isn't licking at it. Whatever it was, it must have been temporary and is healing on its own.

    Mine have some pink paws some not…C3PO does get his pink paws from over licking & chewing. He's allergic to a lot of things so he tends to lick & chew on his paws sometimes.

    Good news. After finishing a 14 day course of antibiotics, using antifungal/antibacterial wipes, and a switch in food, Mojo's toes are almost back to normal. Fingers (and toes) crossed that whatever he had doesn't come back.     I am so sorry that you and poor Rudy have gone through this but that he is improving is wonderful. I have only had one dog with spine injury, in her neck. Fortunately with anti-inflammatory injections, a few chiropractor/vet appts and lifetime use of bromelain, she recovered and rarely had issues. Your dog's injury however is heart stopping. Thank goodness you and your vet acted so quickly before irreversible damage was done.

    my tri boy has a black spot right where I assumed the umbilicus attachment was at birth. my guess would be a leftover mark as it healed the pigment was just darker….like a scar???

    My wife's hand is worse where she can't bend her finger or lift objects. I finally got her to go to the doctor, they X rayed her hand and asked her how long she has had arthritis! So this is how she found out she has arthritis at age 48. It seems that her knuckle where she was bit has an inner infection, no broken bones, they put her hand & finger in a splint. The dog bite did not break the skin, but as any body who has been "really" bitten by a basenji knows they have bone crushing jaws. They leave horrible bruises even if they don't draw blood. The dog seems all better still, no more pain attacks. While petting him we noticed a scab on his ear after the fight. It goes all the way through his ear. The other dog bit a hole in his ear, when she tried to finish him!

    Lexi's nose always turns pink when she's sleepy. I think it's SO cute!! It's like she gets all warm and nuggly and then her nose turns pink. So cute!!! :) :) :)

    My friend's dog at work has this problem. He is not a basenji. He does however have an allergy to soy, palms, poutlry, oak pollen and a handful of other things. the spaces between his toes would get beet red or have dried blood in them. you could try some benedryl. I buy the childrens chewables and dose it out by weight. or you could test the diet and try one of those foods that is hyper sensitive. when Beta was diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Disease, the vets cut out wheat, rice, and corn. They said to find a diet that would mimick foods that were found in the basenji's native landscape. i believe there is an allergy panel that a vet can do, but it is really expensive. you could test it by feeding your basenji boiled chicken only and see if there is improvement. that may be a cheap way to test a food allergy theory.
