Bushy tail

Basenji Talk

  • It's taken Senji over 6 weeks to fully "blow coat"…from July to mid August. He has a brand new shiny coat now. Within the past week or so, it seems like his tail has gotten very bushy. Are basenjis like wooly worms? Does this mean we're going to have a harsh winter?

  • Basenjis can have different coat textures which will effect the "bushyness" of the tail. My foundation bitch Keiko had a long (for the breed) coarse coat and she would grow a tail that greatly resembled a Shiba Inu when I didn't trim it. Her daughter Dallas has a slick, eyelash length coat. Dallas' tail never really needed any trimming as it never got bushy.

  • We keep our male tri's tail trimmed but not our red female

  • Shadow is still blowing his neuter coat and he has always had a thick tail-but not as thick as Sugar's. I keep both trimmed very short. (pic's are in the forum-somewhere!) Damisi's tail is very thin.

And would that be from the Arubmec in her… :D ... some lines are known for "heavy" coats and "bushy" tails!!!!

  • Arubmec in her

    What is that?

Our breeder had an old male tri that had really long grey scruffy hair and looked almost like a wolf.

  • OK - I don't have a clue how to trim a tail. Do you think it's possible to get Daisy's tail in better shape? It has gotten very bushy in the last few weeks! The actual tail stem is very thin compared to the fur camoflauge.

  • I've seen bushier :) I love how deep the red is on the underside of her tail!

I have to go check Ivy's and see what color hers in underneath…I am quite sure it isn't that deep red.

  • Wow it is bushy, but really a beautiful dark mahogany color.

My wife was taught by our breeder. There is an art to it. She uses human hair sissors and cuts sideways on/ with the tail fur, slowly and gently trying not to hack it up. The tip is tricky- she kind of feather's/ layers it to make it look natural. It's easy to trim the black blending fur too much.

She also trims his orange fur on his thighs, near his butt.

  • our female has a big fat lump on her tail, you don't see it but you can feel it.

Arubmec is a kennel name, breeder here in No. Ca.. Pat Cembura

  • Best thing to use on tail is thinner scissors… the a clean up with regular ones

Oh yeah, Senji also gets a bushy butt in the winter. :D I generally leave his fur "au natural". I figure he needs any insulation he can get.

lol, totally off subject but I love the Naruto headband on the 'senji! Absolutely awesome… they kinda remind me of little trouble making ninjas...

(Also the invader zim t-shirt is awesome..)

    that's not a tail…that's a brush! :D That is actually very cute!
    :)

Yep and that's why I crossed her to the linebred Serengeti dog, to "fix" the coat. :)

Daisy's tail would make a good fur (feather) duster.

  • Jack has a pretty bushy tail year round. I love it, and cant make myself trim it. It goes well with his build. He seems to be a bit more muscle than most basenji's Ive seen in person and on the forum in pics and videos…Vet says hes not over weight, he has a muscular build, I love the way he looks, and i prefer the look of the bushy tail!! LOL

We are a family of 6 but if someone comes in the house he will take off then come back in to check them out. He does really like people. He plays quite a bit with other dogs and with the size family he's probably over socialized with the number of people my kids bring back and forth. LOL.. He seems to gravitate towards big dogs too which is pretty funny. I think he thinks he's bigger than he is. He really really loves to run so when we take him to the school field down the street he runs his heart out with the other dogs.

Does anyone know of a website that shows you how to trim a b's tail? Or, should that be left to doggie grooming 'experts'? Kipawa's tail is lovely now, but any bushier and I think I might want to tidy it up.

@khanis: Very bizarre… I heard a story like this years ago but had forgotten all about it. Story was VERY similar. Thanks for the jog down memory lane. Wish you could remember. The story behind the story for me. I must have been in 4th or 5th grade (so would have been 1971 or 72) and had to write a story along the lines of Paul Bunyan, a tall tale. My mother was helping me and told me this story as an example and being the rotten kid I was I wrote it down and turned it in . Since its almost 40 years later it's not exactly as told given the years and memory loss I filled in what I couldnt remember. I do recall my teacher telling me that my story was not a tall tale not sure what grade I got on it more than likely it was what I deserved:(

YES!! C3 does the same thing…I always feel guilty that maybe he's got more energy to burn so he chases his tail. If I'm REALLY feeling guilty I'll take him out for a quick run around the yard or a walk around the block :)
