Beneful Healthy Radiance

  • @Duke:

Duke and Daisy eat Canidae, I like to add a little Merricks dry and then add a little water to make gravy from the dry Merricks. They gobble it up! Duke picks at the Canidae unless I add the Merricks & water. They like Merricks Granny's Pot Pie and Wilderness Blend.

And I have use Canidae for years also…

  • I think I'll try the Canidae first, since I can get it at the local Whole Foods. They don't seem to have a specific fish variety, but if it's got a little in it, I think he'll like it. If he doesn't, I'll order a small bag of the TW online and give that a go. If that fails, I'll be back here… :D

  • We feed our guys Merricks Wildnerness…salmon

  • Hollie gets Merricks wet and Innova dry. She loves them both! I feel better knowing shei s getting a good food!!

  • I use Solid Gold Holistique, but I have dogs with slow metabolisms! LOL

  • I got the Merricks Wilderness. Mixed some into his bowl last night and he picked out all the Merricks and left the Beneful untouched. I think I've found his new food. :D

  • You might also feed a little of their wet food too…I feed them the Merricks Wilderness Kibble & when I give them Kongs I give them Merricks Wilderness wet food...OH MY GOD DO THEYLOVE IT!! :D

  • I suppose if I am going to implement a once a day feeding routine, this will be doable in the near future. Leaving food out all day as I did in the past (because previous owner did this) wouldn't be very appetizing if left to sit all day.

What's the recomended quantity for a 25lb fit male? I'd guess around 1.5-2 cups/day? He gets a 15 minute walk in the morning, a 30 min walk with the dog walker at noon, and another 30-60 minute walk, depending on how my day at work goes, when I get home from work, and then various short pee walks after that as necessary…

I would think that 1.5 to 2 cups is too much. My male who is on the big side and is usually at 27lbs (fit weight) only gets 1 cup a day, but that is mixed with veggies… Also, IMO it is best to split the food, 1/2 in the AM and 1/2 in the PM... Of course all dogs are different and also remember the better quality food, usually the less you need to feed as they get more benefit from it then the "junk" kibble.

  • That seems like a lot to me too..particularly if you are also feeding enrichment and training treats.

Querk is about 24 lbs…and he eats no more than one cup of Innova per day...he is older, and less active though. If he was walking as much as Tucker, I would probably up him to no more that 1.25 cups.

  • Same here…we feed 1/2 cup in the morning with a spoonful of wet for flavor :) & 1/2 cup at night.

Not sure how Xylitol is being marketed. It is an alcohol found in a lot of plants, including birch wood, which is the source of Xylitol used in medicines. And it is toxic to dogs, even in small amounts. Most of the time you find it in sugarless gum and candy. Here is an FDA warning "Paws Off Xylitol": https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/paws-xylitol-its-dangerous-dogs

Thank you everybody so much! I appreciate all the info. I had some vanilla Breyer's all natural and gave my guy a taste of that... boy does he seem to think that's a great treat! Obviously, though I don't want that to be the only thing I do. I'm going to follow up with our vet on getting a draw for the full thyroid panel at hemopet once next pay check comes through. You were right he was only checked for T4. Thank again basenji forums! I was looking back at pics from when he was younger and weighed more. I think he's always been a bit taller than standard and had a little barrel chest. Used to call him a basenji bouncer at the dog park. He was all about playing with the labs, pits and other big dogs - probably because he knew he could outrun them if they ever got too rough. He's much more about slow walks with me and lap snuggles these days ❤

I had a somewhat similar experience. Joey had a seizure which I correlate to taking Simparica. He looked terrible so took him to the vet when the first seizure happened and he was late Stage 2. Put him on Royal Canin kidney kibble and Hills kidney wet food and 4 years later he has only had 1 more seizure and his kidney values have remained constant. I will believe your homemade version is most likely better if you have the correct proportions. All the best to your Bs! Joey will be 15 in November.

I second the Fromms! Loved it, the company is so transparent, easy to reach and very willing to help you with questions and concerns- so aside from being grain free and of good quality..its a win-win I was forced to switch because Oakley has very specific dietary needs and unfortunately Fromms doesnt make a low protein, grain free option (I wish they did). Good Luck

I have been feeding my dogs Diamond Brand Chicken and Rice small breed, according to that website it's not the greatest but not the worst. I might try the Orijen brand and see if my dogs like it, Cooper and missy will eat anything but Abby is more picky that's why I went with the diamond brand cuz she likes it and she will eat it! :)
