  • Karen of Basenji Rescue of So Cal asked me to post the following info. If you have any info or are interested in adopting them you can send me a private message here at the forum or contact Karen:

We are trying to locate anyone who knows anything about two older lady basenjis whose owner died in Lompoc area last month. The poor basenjis had been put into their crates when she died and could have been crated for even up to a week. If anyone knows who these came from or anything about them, the shelter people would appreciate knowing. Also may be needing some wonderful person to offer them a home.

How sad is that….. sorry.. I have little time for people that have young human babies and then get not only one dog, but two.... I have had many people want "2" pups from me thinking that they would be "good "baby sitters" for their toddlers... NOT

Some of the pups are leftover from the winter season but I noticed that there were some that were from a summer litter. There were some breeders in Southern OH-mostly CKC-Continental Kennel Club registry but I think they may have gotten out of the business as they sold some of their dogs to an Amish breeder/dealer. He sold 6 of his male pups a few years ago and they went into rescue. One tested probably Fanconi affected. Earlier this year, there were some Bs that were listed for sale at the Amish auction in OH. I did not attend this auction so I do not know if they were actually sold. There is a breeder in Gallipolis as I just saw the ad-rare colors, barkless, inside or outside dogs, shedless, CKC-which I assume means Continental Kennel Club. I do not know of any other BYBs in OH and I am not sure if any Amish breeders still have Bs. The number of USDA licensed breeders/dealers in OH has increased dramatically since about 2003. The inspection reports are now available online. I believe the best way is to do a google search on animal care and it should bring up the USDA website. You will need to search under Publications Reports and Updates and then it is under Reports. You can also search for the lists of the facilities in the same area. It is not an easy website to find information.

@Quercus: I wasn't actually referring to dogs that are affected, but indentified as carriers. I was remember a discussion that occurred very early on in the testing, that some carriers may have some 'bleed thru' of the 'guilty' gene, and spill sugar very late in life. And Dr. Johnson wasn't sure if it was due to regular old age kidney changes, or some sort of genetic explanation. It is very possible that that is very old information, and no longer accurate…but it wasn't the case of inaccurate testing at all. Good information about testing carriers monthly, though. I didn't realize that, and I haven't been doing it...guess I need to start again.. I have never heard of anyone talking about "bleed thru" or what that is supposed to me. A dog cannot spill sugar [as in fanconi] without having two mutant genes. Which would then mean that the dog is affected. And to make sure it is understood, the two girls that were actually affected did NOT have inaccurate testing. Nothing happened at the lab or at home. The dogs DNA actually shows that they are carriers. Remember this is the linkage test, and not a direct test. With the recent equipment purchase and plan of some more testing, they wre able to narrow the 'possble' genes down to 1/3 of what they were planning to look at…so hopefully more info is forthcoming soon. It is good to know this girl will be getting a great home! Good luck with her!

@etzbseder: Maybe we should all check on the dog and have them contact you. Then they'd have to get back to you quick, or get annoyed by all the B lovers. I LOVE that idea! HA!
