History of Bs as hunters

Basenji Talk

  • I'm curious about the history of the wild Basenji as a hunter in Africa. Along the way, I've come across stories that wild Basenjis hunted in packs and would take down large prey by "body-slamming" themselves against the animal's legs, knocking it off its feet. Is this true? If you can point me to some good resources on the history of Bs as hunters in the wild, please drop me a line. Thanks! ~ Lori ~

  • That is interesting about the "body-slamming" When Tyler and Zoey are running around playing in the backyard, Tyler lets Zoey run around like a little maniac–he will chase her to get her started, then he stands and waits for her to pass by, and he body slams her! Maybe that's from instinct??

  • I'm fairly new to the world of basenjis. My boy is 3. So this may not mean a thing but I've never heard of 'wild basenjis'. Everything I've read and heard says that they have never been wild and have always been domestic/family/village dogs.

  • Being from Florida, I've been to the Ringling Museum in Sarasota. They have art all through that. They have several large paintings depicting Basenji's taking down water buffalo by attacking in packs, and ripping out it's underbelly area'. So someone somewhere heard about that method of hunting in the wild.

My dogs have done that to me like they are trying to bully me!

My sister-in-law and her parents lived in Africa for quite a few years when she was growing up.(Tanzania and Kenya) They said that there were many wild, mongrel-type dogs that had basenji features in their vicinity.

oh - should add that the white pine people have samoyeds and there is no bleed from the collars onto the white coats. and my bearded collie friends have them and swear there is less hair breakage.

@SyberSade: Thank you Dan (Nobarkus) and Ivoss! You Basenji Forum people come through for me once again! When I get back home (Mesa, AZ) I'll hit the bookstore with my list of recommendations and see what I can find. (I'm flying to Sacramento this weekend to see my son play in his last college football home game….....go UC Davis Aggies!! :D ) @lvoss: Go Aggies! I live in Woodland and am a UCD alum. We will be just down the road in Dixon lure coursing the dogs. FYI Ivoss….........UCDavis won the game I went to see son #2 play in! BUT, last weekend UCD lost to Sac State in the Causeway Classic......which made son #1 really happy because he is in a masters program there. But UCDavis had a great season. I think the guys are pretty happy about it (even though they would've liked to beat the Hornets!). Hope you and your "kids" had a great time at the lure cousing..........I was SO tempted to sneak away and run over to Dixon to check it out..........but couldn't bring myself to leave my boys since I rarely see them anymore. ;)

REI Makes a nice pack for dogs. Indy has one but don't clip your leash to it. If you want one you can clip the leash to try a ruffwear. Additionally…watch the weight, remember that water weighs 4lbs per litre so you want to be careful giving them water. We usually have Indy carry his food, treats, a sweater or jacket, and a toy. And then we carry it when he gets tired. We also always make sure that he SEES the treats come out of the pack so he knows he is working for a reason.

Oh yes the hunter dogs… Charlie is still tormented by the adult birds at our dog park. Last spring a baby fell from the tree and hurt itself quite badly. I didn't even realize what Charlie was so interested in untill all the adult birds started freaking out and chasing him around the park. To this day they still seem to remember that he is the bad dog. :)
