• i was told some time ago that chicken is no good for a basenji - is that true??

  • @tewwi22:

Not true… Not sure where you hear that one... but I have fed chicken both cooked and raw to mine for years.. also the dry I use has a base of Chicken along with the canned too....

Now of course dogs can have allergies to it... along with many other things

  • When our dog severe got diarrhea, the vet told us to feed him white rice & boiled chicken. He said that's about the most neutral thing you can feed your dog.

But he told us that chicken alone does not have all the nutrients the dog requires so would not be good for a stand alone diet.

  • I give mine boiled chix and rice or hambuger and rice once and while if i see that maybe there tummy is upset also when it;s real hot out the vet said it's easier on there tummys and they LOVE it :) they call it a "bland" diet not sure how bland it is my dogs dont think it is they think it's YUMMY lol lol :D :D

The reason they call for a Bland diet is that it is supposed to be low to no fat, which is why you are supposed to boil the hamberger in water and drain to take off the fat…

  • my b's do great on Chicken, but they can't handle corn.

  • @sharronhurlbut:

my b's do great on Chicken, but they can't handle corn.

Amen to that… corn!!! yuck... my Kristii only has to look at corn and she breaks out into hives

  • Corn is basically a filler and doesn't provide nutritional value anyway-I try to stay away from it.

  • C3 & TOPAZ LOVE LOVE LOVE chicken..until C3 was diagnosed with allergy to poultry :(

  • do you all just boil it? no seasonings? white only?

  • For tummy upsets, boil, no seasonings… white has less fat.... but I do boil it for regular meals as an extra, especially for my 16yr olds... and I use dark (cheaper)... and keep some of the fat...

  • If you can use brown rice it's better nutritionally than white-also sweet potato is excellent nutrition as well-it's pretty easy for them to digest as well.

  • I make boiled chicken with rice, carrots, green beans and sometimes peas. He loves it the first day, but he doesn't like eating "leftovers" the next day. And yet he'll eat an old deep-fried chicken wing that he "discovers" near the park. (And nearly rip my hand off if I try to get it away from him.) Go figure!

  • that made me laugh out loud!

:D :D I am also not aware of any problems with feeding chicken. Should be fine as far is I know.

@Rebel - Full blood workup including full Thyroid panel (full panel no just what the normal vet workup that is not a full thyroid panel)... as they say make sure that he is in good health. Also what are you feeding him? How much total are you feeding a day? Also with reducing food, add veggies to his food to fill his belly... green beans are good to use... I use Cauliflower and Broccoli... Note also that low normal is typically too low for Basenjis.

To give you an idea of the contrast between Basenjis and Border Collies, my BC once spit out a pill, I said "Blackie" in a disapproving tone, and he picked it up from the floor and swallowed it!

@mryltis Read this comment from @morgansc within this post dated May 30, 2019, 7:49 AM. It answers your question. Ideally it is best to wait until age 24 months but no early than 18 months. https://basenjiforums.com/post/177284
