  • Well, Tabatha…
Mom and I will welcome you to our extended family.. whether it is a Sug or Donna puppy that comes to you this winter!

Neither Mom nor I are hardcore on having opposite sexes together.. she has quite a few girls that run together and I have 8 intact males in my home.. and only two dislike each other. One is leaving our harem soon...
so the rest of the 7 will continue to live in harmony...
although I think the next two months of breeding season (girls... ack!) won't be harmoney around here!!

    Well, hi Kathy!

Thanks for the welcome! I've heard many good things about your beautiful Basenjis, so I am very excited about our dog relationship together.

I'm glad to hear there are exceptions to the rule about females living together. I am a strong pack leader so I'm sure my dogs will respect my leadership decisions.

    Best wishes,

    Tabatha

P.S. Please let me know when the girls go into heat and whom the handsome stud will be - I can hardly stand it!!!

  • Hey Kathy,
Who are you breeding the girls too? Have you picked out the sires yet?…..

See you next month at the nationals... and are you coursing anyone????

  • I remember waiting for our little pup from Khanis Basenjis. Time will fly and before you know it, you'll have a little pup. Gosh…I can't believe Chance will be 1 soon.

How old was your little pup when you got him? How much did he weigh?

As you can see I'm more than anxious!

I flew to Kathy's when Chance was approx 8 weeks old. I couldn't wait any longer:D

I wish I could remember how much he weighed. I had an interesting trip back home with the little guy. He had really bad gas (the kind that could clear a room) :p Everyone kept looking at me like I was the one who smelt bad. Hahaha He slept the whole way. I kept him in a sherpa bag but as soon as we took off, I held him in my lap hidden from everyone.
I just recently started showing Chance. I can't wait to see Kathy during Nationals. Hopefully she will be bringing some of Chance's litter mates :D

  • Yep, we will be there for the nationals.
    I'll have Chance's bro that I kept,
"Adam," aka Khani's Goody Two Shoes.

And, hopefully I will have his Grandpa "Breaker."
He's only been to one national since he won Winners Dog at the
2001 BCOA National. This is Momma NahNee's daddy…
so fingers crossed I can grab him on my way down!

As usual, I will be bringing the rest of the crew....
    even the two-legged ones.

I am pretty disappointed that there won't be the Parade of Titleholders as my son was pretty excited to be able to show our old veteran, Benny, in it.

  • I am already excited about Nationals…Now Chance will be able to play with his brother. This is going to be quite the family reunion :):):)

Such is life, Kathy…. we can't afford a parade of titleholders... it was a stretch for everything we are doing... We do what we can....

    Afford what??
That is what the entry fee is for…
we charged $20 and that paid for those big fancy ribbons with the dogs names on them....
I did it then becuase I wanted my daughter to show a dog at the national and get a big ribbon...
I had plans for both of them showing in it this year...
instead my son will just have to show HIS special (his handling pictures will be coming soon!)...
not sure if he is up to it....
but I don't mind paying the $25 if he REALLY wants to play with the big dogs!

Again, sorry.. we decided not to have it… everyone that runs a National makes their choices...

  • Oh and by the Way, that is not just what the entry Fee is used for… Superintendent takes almost the entire amount these days. Not much left to contribute to anything else.....

Thank you. Yes, our breeder is litter box training. Our first Basenji was a mix (Basenji and Retriever), but she had a lot of Basenji ways. She was already housebroken when we got her, so we didn’t have to worry about that task. We will definitely continue the litter box training until he is old enough to be outside and it is warmer.

Hi everyone! New Basenji owner here from Melbourne, Australia. I know this topic is a couple of months old but I thought I'd just add my experience for anyone else needing help with puppy biting. My wife and I had been having mouthing/biting trouble with our (now) 12-week old pup for the last week. The behavior has improved almost instantly by following the advice in this video. She's still pretty mouthy but it doesn't escalate the way it did before when we'd try and stop her from doing it/yelping/saying '"NO". I think everything we were doing was just turning it into the funnest game ever for her! https://youtu.be/bd1Q56Mfp4M

@nkjvcjs: If you go before nationals you will get to meet BCOSW's rescues too. -Nicole Yep, we are going within this month. I'll give the rescue dogs and extra squeeze!

Welcome to the forum, you will enjoy it here and make lots of friends. It doesn't matter that you have never had a Dog before because Basenjis are certainly not like other Dogs. They are wonderful creatures, can be naughty and a challenge but if you fall under their spell you will want more, lol.

@lvoss: I thought this was a well written article on choosing a breeder. http://www.dogboston.com/askjo/askjobreeder.htm Yes it is, covers all the things that have been pointed out on how, why to go to and find a responsible breeder. Also the questions listed on the Basenji club of America Web site are great for interviewing a breeder
