Getting sick in the middel of the night

  • Hi All,
My 5 year old boy has been throwing up around midnight the last 2 nights. He's doesn't want to eat this morning, and looks pretty tired. It's 7-8 hours after he eats I think. I took him to the vet at 2:00 AM last night because I was worried. Vet can't really find anything…temp is OK, belly is not tender, etc. He gave him a shot to help his lower GI tract, and gave me come pills to help settle his stomach. He's had this about 48 hrs now. Kinda worried because he's never refused to eat before. At least he's drinking water.
    Any ideas????-Thanks,Tim:confused:

  • Did he do an x-ray to see if there's anything in there causing a blockage or other problem?
    Or run any bloodwork?

  • That will be next, if he doesn't improve today…

  • Is he throwing up undigested food, or bile?

  • Mostly yellow. Looks like the food is pretty digested. Can't figure out why he gets sick hours later…..?!

  • Typically called "empty tummy"… what time do you feed him in the evening? Have you tried giving him something like a cookie just before bed? The bile (yellow).. is usually a sign that the tummy is empty and "looking" for food... sort of like a sour tummy

  • I always feed them at around 5:30-6:00…never been a problem...

  • I have a student in my rally classes whose Havanese does this for about 1-2 weeks every summer. She is fine all the rest of the year and her schedule is not changed but for whatever reason, something about that time of year makes her throw up bile.

  • I have found empty tummy to be in direct relation to too much energy expended, not enough fuel in the system. If my bitch that is particularly prone to this has a very active day, lots of running etc. she will definitely vomit bile about 7-8 hours after her breakfast; and sometimes overnight if breakfast comes late. But if I give her a sizeable snack a few 6-7 hours after her meal she won't vomit. This is a bitch that is not easy to keep weight on, and is very, VERY busy….my other bitches that are less difficult to keep weight on, and more..well, calm...don't do this.

  • My male does this every few weeks too, I have yet to find out the actual reason, but maybe I'll try feeding him more often. I have been feeding him only in the mornings, with treats throughout the day. He only throws up in the morning before breakfast if I am lazy about getting out of bed by 7.

If you don't trust the vets you are seeing, please get her to a university vet for a second opinion. Have you talked to any of the other owners of the litter, or is she a rescue? When kennel cough is really bad, it can take months to clear up and the cough go away. She could also have allergies affecting her at night.. where does she sleep? Can you change where she sleeps to see if it's better?

@kipper: Thank you to everyone for the great advice! Kipper is our second Basenji and the thought of loosing him at such a young age is horrific to us. Kip is currently taking metronidazole twice a day. I know the med does make him tired, but it's supposed to help get rid of his virus that in turn will bring back his appetite. I have tried all his favorites like cheese, sour cream and even homemade waffles. His diet is meat twice a day and free feeding of high quality kibble. The vet is very knowledgeable about Falconi and says all his levels are were they should be and the bicarb is all he needs. We will take Kip in again in 3 months for another blood test. Thanks again! Anna I don't want to doubt your Vet, But honestly, I find that hard to believe that he only needs Bicarb and not any of the Vitamins that are recommended in the protocol. If it were my dog, I would contact Dr. Gonto who developed the Protocol and run it by him and he is happy to talk to owners with Fanconi (it is Fanconi, not Falconi) about treatment along with conversations with your Vet. Also Thyroid testing is important for a dog with Fanconi. This would be the fill panel not just the one T4 level that are shown on regular blood work. Dr Gonto's contact info can be found at the bottom of the Fanconi Protocol information http://www.basenji.org/ClubDocs/fanconiprotocol2003.pdf Also you might want to consider joining the Fanconi Yahoo group for people with Fanconi affected dogs. They would also be able to give you good ideas since they are all dealing with dogs with Fanconi. It is a closed group for only people with affected dogs. If he was eating before the metronidazole then hopefully when he is done with that he will begin eating again.

I know some breeds have raised water/food bowls so the dogs are "level" when they eat. Don't know if this will help here, but its worth a try.

As long as his CPP registration got entered before they received the blood sample, you'll hear eventually. If there was a delay in the registration, the blood results won't be posted and you'll have to call Liz.

@abby_basenji: Well after we discussed it further, even though she has tested clear I really don't know that much about her parents and the amount of inbreeding that was done. Do I really want to breed her? Probably not. Besides that I figured if I really want another B there are plenty of people on here that are reputable breeders that I can get a puppy from to breed if I want, or just get a puppy from. I was thinking though if I want to breed I would get one from a breeder here if I want another B just to have another B, I will get one from BRAT! Anyway her appointment is not until the 27th of october that was the soonest our vet can get her in, so that is when we are going. Good for you…. there are many responsible breeders if you decide to go that way... and certainly many in rescue that need loving homes.... your are doing the right thing.... Kudos to you!!!
