Large headed males

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I was looking at the pictures of the rescue dog Miles and just love how big and square his head is. I think males look really good like that.

I was wondering if this is considered a breed standard or is it considered off standard?

or is all to the judge of the day to decide?

Miles is a faboulous dog either way and think realy he looks great!

they were very lucky to get a dog thats great looking and has such a great personality.

@dres_actually - Also that looks to be about the spot that a micro chip is placed? My Franie has a lump there but it doesn't bother her.... might be something for your vet to explore.

[image: 1568761912724-cf26c42d-3b11-4084-adeb-163ff1bb0cdb-resized.jpeg] Best to get all lumps checked out by the vet, they are more qualified than us. Having said that, it’s probably just a lump like this which my dog has had for a couple of years. I asked the vet if they can get rid of it but they said better to leave alone. Fatty lumps are common as they age.

My Teddy had/has what I would call a rash as well. My vet said it is an allergy (he does occasionally lick his paws also) - at first he thought it was a food allergy but it would go away when the spring rains came. It appears to be related to molds and dust mites instead. I give him salmon oil (not the pills but the real oil), freeze his kibble, regularly clean his blankets etc., and give him oatmeal shampoo baths when it really acts up. I also use dermacton cream if his skin gets too dry. We seem to have it under control.

One of the main things they looks for on fatty tumors is "is it connected"… or can you get your fingers around it... meaning it is not attached to anything.... usually when not attached to anything they are OK... just very "unsightly"....

It's settled then. I'm gonna pop it. :) I mess with it sometimes as well. Tucker just wants to sniff and lick my fingers after I'm done scratching at it…then he'll let me go back to work on it. As long as I let him sniff and lick my fingers as I'm messing with it, he'll let me continue and we'll eventually both bore of it and move on...
