How much does your B sleep?

  • How many hours a day do you estimate that your B sleeps? Mine seems to sleep ALL the time, except when he's out on a walk. He's very healthy, no medical problems, and quite happy … just sleeps his life away. :-) Of course, it is summer and very hot here in SoCal. I know that cats and many types of predators in the wild sleep almost all the time. What about your B? Cheers, Lori (ZenGrrrl@aol.com)

Mine sleeps all the time too, except when he's getting walked, eating, or getting his belly rubbed. :D

  • Mine sleeps a lot, but only when he can sleep on me. When I don't let him, he just runs around all the time.

I originally thought it read "how does your B sleep" and mine sleeps curled in a tiny little ball next to my head.

  • All of my dogs sleep the same amount of time. They sleep through the night and then about half the day.

  • i have found that the 6th year has been a calming year for my male. He has calmed down dramatically and is more concerned with snuggling and sleeping than anything else.

  • Oh Mantis I can't WAIT for the "calming year" LOL :D :D

Mine are like bullets for short periods of time & then they sleep for about 18-20hrs a day  they're crazy :D

Mine too but really just on the bed. If I don't let him up he starts to look for trouble. He now starts snoring just seconds after he's on the bed…hmmm I think he's faking so we don't move him.

  • Jala sleeps all night and then almost half the day. My mums basenjis are the same :D Given half a choice I would do the same :D :D

Ellie is fine 99% if the time, but very occasionally (every couple of months) if she's asleep on someone on the sofa and they move slightly she lets out a very aggressive snarl/snap as described in the article. She then wakes up and looks very confused. It feels like she has no control over it and I wonder if it's when she's in a specific stage of sleep. Interestingly she has never done this in our bed at night. We have been training her the "off command" which is rewarded with a treat and that now works well even if she's asleep - she jumps straight off knowing there's a piece of chicken coming her way afterwards!

That is usually one of the biggest problems… someone in the house is NOT good about remember to pick up after themselves... or putting things out of reach of the "Basenji"...

It took 2 months with COngo to learn how to sleep in his own bed. He was sleeping in the bed with my boyfriend until I came along and I sleep walk so I don't like having dogs in the bed with me. Everytime he would try to get in our bed I just put him in his own bed. It took a lot of patience because he would whine, hit me, cry, howl. It took a lot of sleepless nights but we got there eventually and now he actually prefers his bed. The only time I let him cuddle in the bed is in the mornings when we sleep in on the weekends.

Just before I leave for work, EL D goes crazy until he gets his kong toy with treats then he just sleeps until I get home. Then a walk and then he search the yard for squirrels and rabbits, unless he's hungry – he'll prance around the house carrying his food dish or sometimes throwing it. Sometimes he'll watch TV in the evenings or just tear up his toys. Every now and then he'll do the Basenji500 - though mostly it's when he needs to go potty.

A cold Basenji is a cuddly one! [image: recline.jpg] Winter has it's advantages in cold parts of the world! I find Basenji's are like cats, sometimes they want tons of physical attention and other times. it's DON'T TOUCH ME!!!
