    I am looking for information for a potential research project. Has anyone ever had a problem with exercise-induced collapse? Has anyone ever seen this at any sporting competitions they have been to? Especially you guys that participate in the lure coursing or other events. I'm trying to get an idea of which breeds and what sporting competitions this research would benefit. Any info, especially stories from experience would be extremely helpful. Thanks.

    Any brachiocephallic dog has more respiratory problems than a long snouted dog.

    :) My boyfried has a french bulldog and when we got her I was so excited to take her to the dog park. It was a warm day 70? and she started to over heat very quickly. When I noticed we started walking back to the car and she wouldnt walk and just laid down. I got her in the car and turned the air on as much as possible while I called my vet. We then stopped for a huge ice water which I gave to her to drink and put her feet in. By the time I got back into town she was fine.
    This was my first experience with a snub nosed dog and it was very scary.
    She now does not go to the dog park and we are careful to watch her on hot humid days outside.
    She loves to go for walks, but she only gets them in the fall and early spring.
    She now has to settle for a drive around town

    I have seen a whippet collapsing at the end of a race (oval track) on a hot day, he was 9 years old at the time.

    A friend of mine has an 80 lb. chocolate lab that has it. I can get details, but his symptoms only showed up when he became a "senior" and has only had a few episodes. It's pretty much the classic story of out on a walk, having fun and then laying down and having to carry him home. They also have another male, his litter mate - who doesn't have it.

That is so scary!! I doubt the big manufacturers would ever allow a real study to see the light of day, but I would love to see one done. Just the thought makes me want to keep feeding my girl human grade foods. Yeah the same here, her research indicated that raw chicken wings were the optimal food and contain pretty much everything needed. I guess if you think of some of the processed crap they have in supermarkets trading as food for humans you can imagine how low the bar can go for pet food.

    To give you an idea of the contrast between Basenjis and Border Collies, my BC once spit out a pill, I said "Blackie" in a disapproving tone, and he picked it up from the floor and swallowed it!

    Has a complete set of blood work been done? Electrolytes may be off. Ionized calcium (which is not often checked) may be out of range. Tick diseases may lead to neural issues. Previous ‘old’ damage or minor defects of the vertebrae, discs or spinal cord may become more significant with age. A good chiropractor or, as previously mentioned, acupuncturist may be able to help. If you feel that it really is not due to aging, a visit with a neurologist might help.

    The Basenji is still used by hunter/gatherers. It has incredible stamina and is excellent at solving problems. When I got my first Basenji, she would eat everything and escape when she could. After I took her mnt biking (or hiking in the snow) she mellowed out. She knew every weekend she could go out and run, dig, wallow in dirt, sniff other dog's butts and just be a canine. This gave her an outlet and her destructive and nomadic behavior really slowed. I trained her to follow me in the summer. I let her know I had water and let her loose (outside the city, of course) she would take off and do whatever it Basenjis do. Eventually she would get thirsty and find me. Everytime she came back I would giver her water. This conditioned her that I have value. The first couple times were harrowing. Now its no big deal. She trained my other Basenjis how they whole mnt biking/hiking thing works.

    @Duke: Is a collapsed disk the same as a ruptured disk? over-do it during this healing process. No, the disks are not ruptured! I have another vet visit at the end of the month for an X-ray to see if it's worst, same or better, then we'd see from ther what could be done! Thank you all for the kind word:)
