Cali meets Lady and Brandy

Basenji Talk
  • I just recently joined this forum and posted info under the new members forum about my new Basenji named Cali.
MY brother met Cali a couple of days ago and instantly did not like her because of her aloof demeanor. He said that my dog is a wimp and would coward around his dogs. He has a Italian Mastiff, Rottweiler, and Boxer.
As I mentioned in the new members forum I have previously owned aggressive breed dogs and have no problems being around them. Today my brother comes over unannounced and brings his Mastiff by the name of Brandy and his Boxer named Lady.
Cali immediately started to approach the Mastiff and the Mastiff ran away from her and tried to hide behind my brother. She then started barking profusely at Cali, but did not approach her. Lady the Boxer picked up one of Cali's toys and Cali bit her (a little snip). Is this normal behavior for Basenjis? She did all this while remaining calm and unafraid. She definitely stood her ground.
Of course my brother won't be calling Cali a wimp again. She also barked (or something similiar to a bark) and growled at my brother.
I can see that training her is going to be very challenging, but she is so sweet and lovable. Maybe she didnt like 2 strange dogs being in her home.

  • Jazzy is always first to approach another dog, and never backs down , and if challenged, is always ready to "bring it on". BUT, usually a stern word or pull on her collar settles her. . . . a bit. But she'll never, ever be the one to back down.
And if any dog DARES to take one of her treats or toys…yeah, she turns into what we call The Tasmanian Devil Dog. LOL

  • Hollie is also a mixed breed. She is Basenji and Whippet. I found out early on that she fears no other dogs. She is approximately 30 lbs and almost 2 years old. She plays with dogs of all sizes on a regular basis and backs down from none. Her "boyfriend" at the local dogpark is a 6 month old Irish Wolfhound ,whose favorite game is let's put Hollie's head in my mouth, this puppy is already 3 times her size in body (not sure of his weight at this point - but he is expected to be over 170 lbs full grown). Hollie plays with the Mastiffs, Ridgebacks and other large breeds. I prefer this now, seeing how rough a basenji can be when playing.

The only disappointing thing for me was that the vocalizations certainly appeared to be faked. Too bad they didn't manage to capture actual Basenji vocalizations. They used Dolphin sounds which is really hilarious, Basenjis sound like dolphins, who knew?

Nice photos, Jonny was a good boy! He was probably happy to play with another basenji! Glad it all went so well.

My pup never bothered hers much and I didn't even use a spray deterent. (Of course she got used to wearing coats in the winter so maybe that helped.)

@LiveWWSD: Oh what a good dog Keoki is. Charli and his Golden retreaver friend are like that when they haven't seen eachother in a while. Charlie will yell and scream at her untill she rolls over on her back, then he usualy calms down. Now Mind you I take Charlie out to meet dogs at the park EVERY week at least once. You can never stop socializing terriers or they forget and get mean. You know, I think you may be right. When Duke was a young puppy she did take him to puppy classes and he did fine. In fact, his best buddy at class was another Basenji boy. She said that even have problems now just taking Duke to the vet as he viciously – and let me tell you, he is OUT OF CONTROL. If not for his size, they would be unable to handle him -- growls and snaps at every dog in the waiting room. Short of mailing him to Cesar Milan's {sorry Querc, LOL} center, I have no clue where to advise them to look for help. The dog is very sweet, but very high strung and living with a high strung family. There is no clear leader in the family; the dog is jumping on everyone, etc. and I think that really feeds his behavior when they encounter other dogs. Sucks to be them. My dog was awesome yesterday. :p

The neighbors boxer was not so much aggressive with Cali as she was with my brothers boxer. Cali usally plays with their German Shepherd pup and they get along really well. True, I shouldnt have taken Lady anywhere near their boxer, but I thought they would get along because their boxer gets along with the other boxer down the street.. My brother also has a Cane Corso(Italian Mastiff) and a Rottweiler and his Boxer is used to playing with them all of the time because they live together. When I say discipline I mean more of a "time out" in the crate or a stern NO! Sometimes if I clap my hands once and say NO! at the same time she gets the message. I have had her 2 months now and we are both making progress. I am learning what worked for my other dogs does not necessarily work for Cali. I do notice that training her is a lot different from my previous 2 dogs (Pitbull/Rottweiler mix and a German Shepherd). I have been reading a lot of the posts about obedience and training on the forum and it has helped a lot. Cali is like no other dog that I have owned, but I like being challenged.:) :) :)

I understand about the Science Diet - all my Basenjis have hated it! We use Eukanuba Lamb and Rice or Kirkland Lamb and Rice from Costco mixed with a little warm water and a tablespoon or so of Pedigree canned. (of course, they also get a little Red Barn rolled, green beans if I'm trying to get them to lose weight, left-over bait from the dog shows… no, ours aren't spoiled either!) Only get the Pedigree canned puppy or the CHOPPED dinners (not the chunk) as those are the only ones without wheat. Lots of Basenjis are sensitive to wheat. My daughter feeds Purina One Lamb and Rice. A plate or pie tin might work for her. Sometimes they just get notions!!! One of my girls won't eat if her dish isn't in the right place on the mat. Terry
