Jack, the Man of the House

Basenji Talk

  • Well, when my submariner husband is on duty or out to sea, Jack is the man of the house. I thought id brag a little and say, Jack kills bugs (esp. Spiders) for me so i dont have to!! LOL YEAH, im not kidding!! (jelious right?) The other day when hubby was on duty, i saw a HUGE black spider crawling by my foot, i called Jack (just to see what he'd do) and pointed at the spider (I HATE SPIDERS) and he took his Manly paws, and SMASHED it for me!!! LOL!!! YEAY, my hero, i would have just let it crawl away because i was barefooted and they TOTALLY freak me out!!! I gave him a peanut butter sandwich as a treat and hugged him so tight he probably couldnt breathe, lol. now whenever theres a creapy crawling thing, i get Jack to take care of it for me!! Its great!! lol

  • Hmmmm, at least he crushes them first. Mine torture eveything, roll it around, disable it, then let it suffer because it doesn't move right anymore. The Boxenji just walks over and hovers it. Taste? What Taste??

  • haha…WELL good for you then too that you have someone to get the buggies for you. hehe

  • My Bs have me trained to kill spiders and bugs for them….anytime I see my B going after anything, I step in and get rid of it because I'm afraid that they could get bitten somehow--and we do have black widows and brown recluse spiders in my area. My german shepherd mix loved to catch flies--and I would always try to stop her because flies are so filthy....yes--I am a bit of a hypochondriac.....but only when it comes to my babies.......

  • true true, when Jack tries to catch flies and flying bus with his mouth i get so disgusted!! but i cant be there to stop him, and its OK with me for Jack to save me from the evil bugs!! lol (but i dont think we have dangerous spiders in our area, only BAD ticks!! (i LIVE close to Lyme, CT…boo)

  • I am glad to know my basenji mix isn't the only one that chases flies and other flying insects. I have to admit, it is funny to watch her chase a fly around my office while I'm at work. Never a dull moment.

just wanted to say that "PATIENCE" is probably the best treatment for a Basenji. Be patient and "Little Man" will acclimatize to his surroundings and you. And not most dogs patience...Basenji patience! (This could mean months)

Welcome to my world…my new male Basenji started marking when he walked in the house and then my Rocky boy decides he needs to mark too. I've been walking around with a spray bottle of Simple Green and rags - not to mention yelling, "Go outside to pee!" a lot. Finally, today the p***ing contest stopped. Whew. (I didn't mention I have four females and one foster female who is not spayed!) Watch the vinegar, I used it and the carpet smells like a salad when the air is humid. Yuck. I've been steaming with simple green, then rinsing well with water and 1 cup of Febreze Concentrated Fabric Freshner. I buy it in the gallon size.

I think you need to go back to house training 101…. just like if they were pups... and it is an adjustment.... My question is however... what was he like in the foster home? How did they do with house training... or more like what did they do about house training...?

@Barklessdog: We got our dogs a little bed for the family room for christmas and I snapped a couple of pics of our Tri. The other dog came over and.. [image: basketcase.jpg] She heeded the warning and went away while I kept playing with him, no scuffle. A child is going to have know theses signs as well. This is how Tyler looks when he has settled in to sleep and Zoey wants to come in an "nest" before she settles. Zoey has learned to heed the warning also and doesn't disturb Ty when he's already settled.
