  • ha ha, Caesar too. He has mastered flipping up my stainless can lid with his nose to get anything from the bathroom trash can.

And Cairo likes to run wild with the toilet paper…..

  • Daisy is into used q-tips - ditto ewww! She's still young, so I find she enjoys shoes and socks too. A bit too expensive for me, so I buy Merricks twisted smoked raw hide by the dozen to satisfy her chewing delight.

  • Our Rosco used to LOVE green beans. It was so funny to hear him crunching away on raw ones. He would always take the beans into a separate room to eat them.
I actually have a video of feeding him a few.. the audio is delayed.

Wow, Rosco's Tail curl stright , it doesnt seem to fall to one side!! Its neat!

  • Goober LOVES junk food. Potato chips, cheese puffs, we used to keep those tiny candy bars from holloween in the house all the time, but we can't anymore :( He also likes pizza crust.

  • My Ziggy has picked up a new habit: eating mud! It gives him terrible diarrhea (which doesn't seem to bother him but keeps ME sleep-deprived, as he has to poop during the night, and I have to get up and clean). Does anyone else see this weird mud-eating behavior?

Eating mud/dirt may mean that he's trying to calm his stomach. When Pepper was at the end of kidney disease–she started eating dirt/rocks/etc. It was because she had an upset tummy. I think there is sometimes an underlying cause when they eat dirt. He may need some medication for tummy upset, or he may have some kind of illness.

  • That was my first thought, although I was reluctant to tell "my" story because it has a sad ending.

The only time I've ever had a dog start eating mud, which also resulted in diarrhea, she was diagnosed with a large cancerous abdominal tumor and had to be put down.

I think I'd take him in for a health check – could be serious or not, but it's sure not worth the risk.

Right–it may not be anything serious--but best to be on the safe side.

  • I dont know if its that healthy or not but i give pilot uncooked pieces of hot dog once in a while and he loves it.

  • Sometimes anemia also makes them want to eat dirt and mud.

  • Sawyer and Wyatt both like to eat grass and other plants in the yard. I had to get rid of several of my house plants because they were not good for dogs. They also love fish. I put a spoonfull of salmon into thier dinner everynight and they love to go fishing with us to try and steal the discarded bits.

  • My EL D likes anything on my dinner plate, especially chicken! Won't touch fruits or veggies but my vet said to give him some cooked pumpkin or sweet potatoes for fiber, which he does eat.

My previous beasty used to like to eat fresh strawberries from my garden. At first I couldn't figure out why the patch was always flattened and mashed and then once I caught him in the act - munching happily on the fresh strawberries!

I think I've mentioned here before that both my B's love to pick the blueberries off my bushes. It's so cute to watch them, carefully, oh! so carefully, pulling each little berry off; spitting out the green ones, and eating the blue.
Kind of irritating too, though because I lose a lot of green berries!

Gypsy, my golden mix, also picks snow and green beans peas off the vines.

  • I forgot to mention that my previous basenji loved to eat rabbits that he caught and muskrats. (I did my best to get those away from him)

    Oh. ew.

We have found one or two squirrel carcasses in the yard over time, but I'm not sure who's killing them. Gypsy has in her youth, but I'm not sure she has the eyesight or speed for that anymore, so it's probably one of the Basenjis. Grosses me out!

I know they'd both like to make lunch out of my cats.

I read your blog and find it kind of confusing and ….. your comment about "messing with ..." hmmmmmmm.... Anyhow, yes, it is so cool when you come across another basenji, because they totally understand each other and how they want to play. We were fortunate once to have another basenji play chase with Kipawa at a dog park. I just don't think there are many basenjis in the Lower Mainland. :(

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

I could list a whole lot of things but the snuggling under the covers is the sweetest. That's when I love her most. One thing I'm really really thankful for now that Abbey's 7 is that she no longer explodes out of the covers at 2 am when a helicopter flies over. Gotta love her for that. Took 7 years but my girl has finally grown up!

lol usually when you breed a bigger dog to a smaller dog the Male is the tiny one. Its just dangerous to do it the other way around. As far as DNA breed testing I would go for it if I could. But i am just interested in those kinds of tests. We offer them at our clinic but i haven't ever seen results for them.

@phoenix3: Looks like a B to me but i think more of a B mix he looks like he has corse hair Maybe be has the size of a cattledog body and a basenji head :) My Aspen is a cattledog/ terrier mix he has the body of a cattledog {the colors} and the height and face of a terrier heres a pic so u can see the colors of the cattledog well one color anyways :D :D phoenix3 - this is Aspen? I'm so amazed at her spots, because my Daisy has spots like Aspens. We know her mother is pure R/W Basenji and she is thought her other half Beagle. One of her other litter mate moms thought Blue Healer (cattledog). But I subscribed to the Beagle. Daisy could be … Cattle Dog I suppose. She's bigger than Duke now at almost 9 months old. I will show her off soon on "Show Off" forum soon.
