Looking for a Basenji to join our family
-
My name is Vince. I am looking for a Basenji to join our family. I grew up with a tan and white male named Dusty when I was a boy. My wife, son 16 years old and myself are ready to welcome a new family member. I have such great memories with my friend Dusty as a young boy. We do not have any dogs in our home now. We had to put our mini doxie down about 6 years ago she was 17. We have a single family home In Chico, CA on a 1/4 acre fully fenced. thank you for any help.

@venserro - It is now past the season when Basenji puppies are born as Basenjis only come in season once a year (majority) so pups are typically born Nov/Dec/Jan. Responsible breeders have reservations lists for their expected litters so pups from 2019 have been place and are in their new homes. You need to start now communicating with breeders for their plans for the Fall of 2020. I would also suggest that you contact breeders in the Pacific Northwest and So. California as there are only a couple of breeders in No. California (I am one of them but have no breeding plans for 2020). Go to www.basenji.org and you can search by state.

Thank you for the info. I was worried about that. I will reach out to them and see what their plans are. Again thank you and be safe.

@venserro - Note that if you are looking at websites with all the social media these days many are not keeping their webs up to date... email and follow up with a phone call. Just a FYI, would not be "tan"... but Red and White...

You can also contact BRAT (Basenji Rescue and Transport) for available Basenjis. They do not have all the available dogs on their website, and they usually do not have puppies, but what they DO have is Basenjis who have been fostered, and their foster parents will tell you EVERYTHING about their habits and behaviors, likes and dislikes. Our Cassie was a BRAT rescue and she was such a good girl. https://www.basenjirescue.org/
AND there is also Pam Hamilton's EXCELLENT Camp Basenji. Pam is the Basenji Whisperer and if you are lucky enough to adopt one of Pam's dogs, you will be amazed at the training they already have! Our latest Basenji, Binti, came from Pam and she has been a constant delight for the last 4 years. Again, these are not puppies usually, but five year old Binti settled into our home in a day! She is amazingly obedient (for a Basenji) ! Camp Basenji is found at www.campbasenji.org.
Hope you find your forever Basenji real soon!!!!

@venserro - Please be sure to check out pedigrees and also health testing, you should always check that out for yourself... I always refer anyone interested in Basenjis, including my own breed to Ofa.org to review DNA testing... you can look for responsible breeders at www.basenji.org and you would be better looking at the Pacific Northwest...pleaseask for references and for sure health testing.
