Help identify if my dog Ely has Basenji heritage.

    "Most dogs" are relatively quiet for the first month (or two). It takes them a little while to get acclimated to their new home, which usually means they take some things a bit slow. The excitment you are seeing is possibly a mix between not understanding what you want (ex: walking on heel) mixed with being someplace new that she wants to explore. Work on her walking manners, and consider taking her along for a run. Maybe she would be interested in a game of fetch(?). Try to find something that will tire her out.

    As far as "Basenji heritage"... I don't see it. That doesn't mean it isn't there. If you decide to do a DNA test, please share the results with us. :) Congrats, she looks like a cool pup!

    I don't see Basenji in Ely. You can do a DNA test, and it will tell you what kind of dog he is. To me, his face looks
    a bit like a pitbull, but that is just to me. I think he is adorable. For one thing, Basenji's ear's do stand up. Some
    have one that kind of flops over for one reason or another, but if you look a pics of the basenji, their ears do stand
    up.
    Like elbrant had said, some dogs take adjusting to a new environment before they become vocal. Right now enjoy
    the quiet, and I would probably guess Ely will be vocal when he gets nice and comfortable. Long, long walks make
    a dog very tired, and they do no get into trouble (chewing and etc.). "A tired dog, is a good dog." If you do a DNA
    please don't hesitate to let us all know what he is..........outside of being adorable.

    Ely looks like a beautiful pitbull. As the owner of basenjis, deckers and a pittie, while I love my senjis and decker (who just passed away), they are a bit stubborn. Pitties are much easier to train. You would be lucky if it was either breed.

    My Goldie was half basenji, and her tail only curled a little, and she had LOTS more fur than a Basenji, but she was Basenji through and through in her actions, her attitude, and her lack of barking. She could bark, but did much more Baroo type vocalizing. Sweet Goldie got us started on a life of pure bred curly tailed clowns!!!! Your Ely is just beautiful. If you do decide to do her DNA, let us know. Whatever you decide, you are going to have a lifetime of love and laughs!!!!!

    @doggonecrazy It is certainly a beautiful dog. I was looking for a new dog because I have one but lately I want to expand the family. The breed I wish I had now is a miniature bull terrier, loyal and strong by nature. Looking for a bull terrier breeders near me I found the Costa Cabana breeder and the truth is that it has very good reviews. Does anyone know him? How is it? A greeting!

    @scewbydoo One of our vet techs volunteers with the shelter where she was born. Her mom was labeled as Jack Russell. Her goofy nature makes me think Boxer mix, but who knows. The shelters down in S. TX aren't the most accurate at breed identification. I once had a shelter in San Antonio send me a picture of a brindle Basenji they wanted me to pull...it was a calico cat. Regardless of breed, Roxy is home.

    Glad to hear things have improved. If it was a partial blockage perhaps it has resolved, but I agree that a vet check would be a very good idea just to be safe.

    First, thank you for the honest evaluation of your situation. Basenjis are dogs that consider who they live wit, to be part of their pack - family. They only chew or destroy things when they are bored, or mad at you. (Yes, I know people will disagree, but I have had basenjis for 25 years and have witnessed this activity. This included one dog jumping on the table, with me sitting 3 feet away, and peeing in a circle, as if saying, "There, take that!”) A young basenji, under say, 8 years, will do this when left alone for so long. (Yes, I know people will disagree, but I have had basenjis for 25 years and have witnessed this activity. This included one dog jumping on the table, with me sitting 3 feet away, and peeing in a circle, as if saying, "There, take that!) You write that you live with 3 roommates. You do not mention if this will change, so I will assume it will not. Personally, I think it is very unkind (to them AND the dog) of you to bring a basenji into this living arrangement. Unless ALL the roommates understand, and agree, to sharing their lives with a dog that will require so much of their time. The tiniest thing left on the floor could be destroyed, and could even harm the dog. Bathroom doors left open? A basenji might not be able to find anything as much fun, grab the toilet paper, and run. Fun, fun, fun!!! For the dog. You are researching enough to show that you are checking really well to see if a basenji will fit into your life. In my opinion, not just yet. Maybe later when your life has settled a bit. Oh, just remembered you mentioning you studying, the dog doing its thing. It might happen, but if the dog thinks your attention should be on him/her, you may not like that something. Best of luck in your studies, and with where ever your life leads you!

    In the video, I do see a lot of basenji traits, but who know... some mixes look like nothing they are really related to. Some basenjis, espec mixes, can be quite large.

    luckily the seizures dont happen anymore and ya they sleep in bed with us lol, cant get rid of them. ha. hope the seizures never happen again.

    My mum has one of these, though a bit different.A good friend of hers, sadly no longer with us of the Taysenji Basenjis brought it back for her when she spent time living in Zambia many years ago. It will be passed down to me when my mum is no longer here as it has sentimental values and I will never be parted with it.
