Anal leakage

When my 3 yr old female B sleeps she will have super stinky discharge occasionally. We have her gland cleaned every 7 weeks.
    Help! Stinky and poopy stain!

Does she have a medical condition? If not, generally diet fixes anal gland issues. In fact, frequent expressing can cause inflammation, scarring and increase the need. Generally adding fiber (powder or products like canned pumpkin) will help your dog express them on their own.

LOL to eeefarm... there are a few things I can say "not going to ever happen" to... expressing anal glands is one of them. Yeah you can learn, but I'm pretty sure my heaving and throwing up from the smell is not going to help the situation!

  • The more often you clean anal glands, the more often you have to. Don't do as a regular every seven weeks exercise, give her more fibre in her diet and only express them when it seems absolutely necessary.

  • Completely agree with Zande that "expressing the anal glands" causes problems. Might even go so far as to say "the more the more". Also agree that adding some fiber is a good first step. The easiest way I've found to accomplish this is to add some canned pumpkin to the food. Easy, not expensive, and the dog usually likes it.

  • @h-castillo Sounds like something wrong, either diet or a medical problem. To give you an idea, my dogs have anal glands expressed about three times in eleven or twelve years. Usually because there is something else wrong. You should be careful as tumors can be a problem in the anal sacks, so best to get it checked out.

  • @2baroos mine is so embarrassed too! She tries to clean it too! It started after she was fixed. I didn’t know that the gland could be removed. When her gland is cleaned by her groomer, the groomer says it is clean. So I don’t know why it would leak.

  • @debradownsouth yes it is a dirty job, I have done it. I will add pumpkin to her diet. And will also tell groomer not to clean her gland.

  • Thanks everyone

  • Some are just like that I guess. Every few weeks we had to go to the Vet and get them drained and antibiotics.
If it keeps up it may be something to consude4. We had Pet Insurance so it wasn’t too much.

I will add pumpkin to her diet.

I provide "Bug" pumpkin with every meal as it keeps her 'regular'. Just a half teaspoon, a little seems to go a long way.
I buy can(s) of "pure pumpkin" (not pumpkin pie mix) and drop teaspoonfuls onto a cookie sheet, then toss it in the freezer. After they are frozen, they all go into a zip lock bag. I take out a few days worth at a time and let it defrost in the refrigerator. One 15oz can will last quite a while.

Can you get "pure pumpkin" at a pet store? I'm going to try this with my new girl. She is four but was bred several times by her breeder. Not sure if this has anything to do with it but her anal glands seem to fill up much more quickly than my last few pups. She still scoots periodically although she is on a 1/4 tsp of Metamucil as recommended by her vet. Love your idea of freezing "dollops" then thawing them out as needed. Thanks for the info!

  • @njdeb You purchase cans of pure pumpkin at the supermarket. If you live in the USA, since it is so close to Thanksgiving, you can purchase a case of canned pumpkin at Costco for a good discount.

Thanks so much for the info (you can tell I don't do very much cooking. The microwave and frozen food are my friends) Will pop into my local grocery store and pick up some this weekend. Thanks again!!

@kayg said in Food recommendations for anal gland issues: I’m going to eliminate lunch starting today and see how he does. I forgot to stress, when you eliminate lunch, don't just spread the same amount of food over two meals instead of three. Cut back. I need to weigh Mku who will be 6 months old on Friday, but I am sure he is nowhere near 20 lbs. He is sleek and svelte and a perfect weight at the moment for his age. Lovely shape LOL. And at risk of becoming boring, I say again, no actual treats do mine get. I measure the daily amount of kibble each morning into a container and from that container I take some with us on walks (to encourage recall) and I dip into it as a reward for particular good behaviour. Hoover and Mku think they are getting a treat, but it is not 'extra' - it comes out of their daily ration ! And I agree with DonC - what exactly started you worrying about his stools ?

@donc How about that ! I always thought it was just Marvin being. . . Marvin ! I didn't realise the refusal ever to ask directions was in-built in his DNA. Lovely story ! Cheered me up no end !

It could be the type of food you are feeding. What food do you feed? You should not have to express them that often. Leaking anal glands are not good. My older female had her anal glands removed a few months ago because of problems, infections that would not clear up and leaking. Jennifer

We have also used fish oil (1/2 gel cap 2x/wk) and flax seed oil in the same dosing. I don't know if it has made a difference with the anal issue but it sure helps her coat and skin! Totally worth the money and effort.
