Basenji + ? other dog breeds ?

Moved Basenji Talk
  • @layla I am constantly wondering how these mixes happen. A Lab is a big dog and Basenjis are tiny by comparison. It is rather mind-boggling! Nevertheless you have a very sweet Dog! Also a VERY lucky Dog. :)

My 90 pound Rottweiler bitch backed her behind up to my bed to let our neutered rescue poodle hump her. My then 9 yr old daughter had a serious talk with both of them, lol. I saw a saint bernard bitch lie down for a chihuahua (owners not paying attention.. I yelled for them to look, lol).

Where there's a will there's a way fits with dogs in heat.

  • Yes, like you said where there's there's a will there's a way. That's hilarious about the St. Bernard and the chihuahua"

I am not sure where you got your information, but no, breeding a dog or cat or horse or cow or pig or any mammal to another breed does one thing only-- produces mixed offspring that time. When you breed to another purebred, those offspring are not "ruined bloodlines". They are just as pure as before.

IOW, if your XYZ show queen mates with Mr Doodles, the neighborhood stray, the kittens produced are mixed. Obviously not XYZ purebreds.
Next time, you breed your XYZ queen to a purebred XYZ tom, the kittens produced are PUREBRED XYZ. Their bloodline isn't ruined. They have no dna from the previous litter.

  • Cats and dogs and other mammals that have more than one offspring at a time can have a different sire for each offspring. (Technical term: superfecundation.) That still doesn't affect the NEXT litter. It is simply biologically impossible. I don't have to be "an expert on cats"... I have a fairly solid understanding of biology and genetics. The "bloodlines change" is, simply, impossible. Whatever old wives tales people might believe, it is, in fact, not biologically possible.

This forum or any forum, anyone with a basic biology and genetics understanding will tell you the same thing if you post that.

You aren't the only person who has wondered/thought the same thing. So... here is a professional answering it, with also an explanation.

What about future litters? There is never any lasting affect from the genetic input from a previous father. So you can breed her to any male you want after this. <<

How are things in Israel? I pray you are safe.

Thank you. I am in Haifa which is probably the safest area, also the place where coexisting is at least the ideal. It's rather encouraging to have Jewish, Muslim and Christian shops' owners and employees come out calling the Samoyed's name (Moose).

Oddly enough, here we are, closer to Africa and I have yet to see another Basenji. But we've met several Samoyeds!

When I was still breeding Siberian Huskies, I sold a pup to a family from Jerusalem who eventually moved back and took the Sibe back with them. They didn't consider it odd that they would have that type of a breed there, their neighbours back home always had a Keeshound.

    • Does anyone have any experience with using 'booties' on Basenji in the Winter? *

Yes, as I wrote on the other thread. I used Muttluks quite successfully with my last two boys.

  • @mvdperez said in Basenji + ? other dog breeds ?:

*Wow. How do they survive in the heat? They must never grow their Winter coats, I am assuming?

The coat insulates both ways, it insulates against the sun too. Our Sibes would lay in the sun as much as the Basenjis would. The worst thing you could do for dogs like that is to shaved that coat off.

  • We live outside Phoenix Arizona and the heat here is scorching but our dog does OK. He does have full access to our airconditioned home, and we always exercise at dawn during the summer.

  • A pretty simple test for a Basenji is behavioral. If your pup is sweet, and yours looks like she is, then she is likely not a Basenji. If she's a total PITA then she is!

Only kidding. (Sort of). Anyway, as others have said, the only real way to find out is the DNA test. Hard to determine on looks (or behavior). Till then keep enjoying your canine companion.

We run the air all the time, keeping it under 70. It's cooling off some so he's fine. She is under the covers because we keep it cold. He goes out early morning, quick midday, then longer in the evening. We keep his coat stripped down. I have no idea if it will get cold enough to get a winter coat. It's not generally COLD here.

First, thank you for the honest evaluation of your situation. Basenjis are dogs that consider who they live wit, to be part of their pack - family. They only chew or destroy things when they are bored, or mad at you. (Yes, I know people will disagree, but I have had basenjis for 25 years and have witnessed this activity. This included one dog jumping on the table, with me sitting 3 feet away, and peeing in a circle, as if saying, "There, take that!”) A young basenji, under say, 8 years, will do this when left alone for so long. (Yes, I know people will disagree, but I have had basenjis for 25 years and have witnessed this activity. This included one dog jumping on the table, with me sitting 3 feet away, and peeing in a circle, as if saying, "There, take that!) You write that you live with 3 roommates. You do not mention if this will change, so I will assume it will not. Personally, I think it is very unkind (to them AND the dog) of you to bring a basenji into this living arrangement. Unless ALL the roommates understand, and agree, to sharing their lives with a dog that will require so much of their time. The tiniest thing left on the floor could be destroyed, and could even harm the dog. Bathroom doors left open? A basenji might not be able to find anything as much fun, grab the toilet paper, and run. Fun, fun, fun!!! For the dog. You are researching enough to show that you are checking really well to see if a basenji will fit into your life. In my opinion, not just yet. Maybe later when your life has settled a bit. Oh, just remembered you mentioning you studying, the dog doing its thing. It might happen, but if the dog thinks your attention should be on him/her, you may not like that something. Best of luck in your studies, and with where ever your life leads you!

In the video, I do see a lot of basenji traits, but who know... some mixes look like nothing they are really related to. Some basenjis, espec mixes, can be quite large.

You know- I hadn't thought about it, but there is a new standard poodle in our complex that everytime Jack sees him he goes crazy- hackles raised, growling, baring teeth. That is the only big dog he has ever had an issue with. I think it might be because the owner doesn't pick up the poop like she is supposed to, so maybe he catches on to the fact that I'm not really their biggest fan.

@Andrew: Thank you…. I think I have officially gone Basenji crazy. My boyfriend teases me because I have taken over "his" dog, "his" username, and "his" love & gone two steps farther. He wanted a basenji because he had a mix growing up, and I was very leary. But now I have fallen head over heels in love with our dog... I plan my day around trips to the park, budget money just to buy him treats & toys, think of silly games to play with him to make him happy, etc. Thank you for the resources! I'm tired of all the same old reading about Basenjis on the internet (the Basenji is a barkless dog... always alert... blah blah blah). Now I want to REALLY learn about them. And there are many of us here that will be happy to answer questions for your too!
