Picked up my new little buddy last month

    Hello Everyone~ Lost my 14 year old girl, Delle, last June. As you can imagine It was an emotional and financially exhausting time. Over the next year I found that not having a dog gave me time to enjoy my other pet, a horse and develop a social life again. But even with the enjoyable extra time (I spent a lot of time with Delle in her last months because she was fighting renal issues) I missed the close companionship of a dog. And once you are addicted to Basenji's there is really no other dog for you. So ..... two months (having eschewed the terrors of dealing with puppyhood) I drove to MA and met and fell in love with Olly (aka Heart Skips a Beat) from Eldorado Basenji's. In July I was back again to pick up the new girl in my life. Olly (who will probably be called Allie since few people get her name right) has had a couple of litters and in addition to be a silly Basenji is a kind and nurturing soul. Of course coming off the breeding and showing program, she is finding this new lifestyle very different ("what do you mean ''heel and sit"? " Get into the crate? Hey, that show stuff. I'm retired now. I don't do crates anymore") but she is already becoming a Diva and loves sleeping in "our" bed! Welcome home to NJ, Allie!!

    That is WONDERFUL that you have taken an adult. She is right, she's done showing, time to kick up her heels a bit (just not too much)!
    I had to look for her picture. She is beautiful.

    If you like Allie better, fine. But otherwise, just tell those who mangle it "Olly" like "olly olly oxie free" or "Stan and Ollie". They'll catch on!

    Both our basenjis came to us as adults. Toby was a "golden opportunity" (love that phrase) retired show dog; Jake was a rescue who'd lost both his humans to death in a short period. Each of these boys filled our home and hearts the way only basenjis can. Circumstances have prevented us from getting another dog since Jake's passing three years ago, but i can't wait to bring another one home someday.

    @debradownsouth Thank you for the kind words but I have to admit... I take young adults for my own convenience. I simply don't have time, stamina or energy to deal with the pups as adorable as they are. Having a puppy is like having a baby or too! Did I mention I was not into children and babies or can you guess?lol. I love the retirees. they are already used to crates (although Ollie is now somewhat recalcitrant about getting into hers because she would rather hang out with her now "Mom", lol!! They travel well. They are usually somewhat used to people. Ollie is not used to playing by herself and is just getting used to "big" breeds. She doesn't get the commands "sit, down or stay" yet but we are working on it. She is the champ of the "heel" command however!!

    Everyone meet Klassic's Trixie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We drove the 3.5 hours from Pittsburgh to pick up Trixie from Sue (Klassic Basenji's in Marion, OH). It was a very long day with 7 hours of driving to and from, but the ride home was much better than the ride there, except for the part where Trixie peed on my friend that went with me to pick her up! Trixie seems to be adjusting well so far, we are about 50/50 with going potty outside. Trying to learn her body language as to when she needs to go out! She is a stubborn thing on the leash and that will need much work as well! So happy to have her here! She loves our kitty Pinkie, and our miniature pinscher, Zombie. Zombie is more interested in stealing the puppies belonging's and claiming them for her own.     Before you get a puppy… go to the Basenji Club of Canada and Basenji Club of America websites and read up on Fanconi and other heritable diseases. ANY breeder not testing for these disease is NOT someone you should spend your time or money on one of their puppies. Too bad you didn't look 4-5 months ago... there was a lovely litter of Khani's pups up in Drumheller! Best of luck to you!

    @Janneke: This discussion isn't new.. Every now and again it comes up when new members are 'overwhelmed' by all the goodness of the oldies here ;) But I have to say.. It is better now than it has been.. (but I'm a very positive thinker ;)) So the discussions weren't for nothing :) I think there has to be a balance between sharing info and scaring people off.. You can't be 'only nice' when people are asking things, or planning things, with which other people don't agree. (like breeding without health testing.. or buying a pup when it's clear the breeder isn't ok..) Maybe the problem is, that everybody wants to say the same thing and it becomes a bit too much.. But that's a forum.. everybody is allowed to share it's opinion.. even if the one before him already said the same thing.. You should all visit the Dutch forums.. ggg.. we (cheeseheads) can be very direct.. so it's not always as nice and well said/written as it is here.. :D I agree, especially with…well, everything above. But in a way, it is kind of good for this topic to come every now and again, because it helps people like me try to really think through how something is going to sound to a newbie, rather than just saying what I think. People are never going to want to hear that they puppy they love (and rightfully so) wasn't exactly the bargain they had hoped for...but that doesn't mean we don't welcome everyone here. And it doesn't mean we should stop trying to educate people before they buy...for every one person that is sick of the message, there may be fifteen reading silently that are getting something from it. I am truly sorry when someone's feelings are hurt about their beloved pet by something they read here...but if another person is helped by the post, that is important too.

    I wouldn't recommend getting a basenji until you've organized your new schedule with baby. basenjis are wonderful dogs, but require a lot of attention and stimulation. If you can't provide that, he could become a frustrated dog and cause mischeif. I've also read that they aren't the best with children. I haven't had the best experience with my basenji and daughter. It has a lot to do with the fact that we can't give him sufficient attention and exercise like he needs. he also hasn't adjusted to my daughter's presence either. that may not be a problem for you because you're having baby first then dog. they say its always a plus because it allows the child to establish a dominence over the dog, since child was there first. i don't want to be a sour apple, but i just want to let families with children know that it can be difficult and dangerous if proper care isn't given. its also unfair to the precious breed if they cant have the active life they need and crave.
