• I was getting my 10 yr old basenjis teeth cleaned today and the ALT level was 900. They said norm is about 125. Does anyone know anything about ALT levels?

  • It relates to liver enzymes. I would think your vet would want to look into it.

  • As eeeefarm said, Liver Enzymes. I would not have surgery done?

  • There are many causes for elevated ALT. With a level that high, I am really surprised your vet didn't discuss it with you. Since most causes are liver related, doing surgery ..well, if your vet put your dog under to clean its teeth after that number, you really need to get a consult with another vet or specialist.

  • Same here. After routine blood work to prep for teeth cleaning, my 7 year old male basenji has 900 level for ALT as well as high levels for ALK, Globulin, and Total Protein. We did an ultrasound as recommended by vet, which did not find anything abnormal in terms of enlarged liver or masses. Vet has suggested to start him on Denamarin, water soluble Vitamin E, and omega fatty acids. Then to test blood again in 1-2 months. Vet says to still go ahead with the teeth cleaning since liver issues can also be a result of teeth issues. Please let me know how it turned out for you!

Did she always have them or did they start after something/some time? Do antihistamines clear the problem?

@Rebel - Full blood workup including full Thyroid panel (full panel no just what the normal vet workup that is not a full thyroid panel)... as they say make sure that he is in good health. Also what are you feeding him? How much total are you feeding a day? Also with reducing food, add veggies to his food to fill his belly... green beans are good to use... I use Cauliflower and Broccoli... Note also that low normal is typically too low for Basenjis.

To give you an idea of the contrast between Basenjis and Border Collies, my BC once spit out a pill, I said "Blackie" in a disapproving tone, and he picked it up from the floor and swallowed it!

@emilia Yes sighthounds often but not always test low. If their coat is bad, low energy and other signs of hypothyroid, a trial of meds won't hurt. But as with anything it varies, and you can't look at ONE thing. That's why having the results analyzed by someone who knows look at it. But the other 3 are normal range, and a low t4 has always been an issue with vets in the old days only testing for it, then medicating. Jean Dodds helped tremendously to push for full panels. -TSH - <0,005 ............ Normal range: Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) 0 - 0.58 ng/mL fT4 - 5,35....................Free thyroxine (FT4) 9 - 39 pmol/L fT3 - 2,2......................Free tri-iodothyronine (FT3) 1.2 – 8.2 pmol/L Cortisol - 45,3.............Cortisol, pre 15 - 110 nmol/L
