Multiple bumps on forehead

  • Hi guys!

Well, our beloved Tiki (who I've posted here about his epilepsy saga... which is still an issue and attempting to get controlled....) had developed bumps on his forehead a week ago. He went to the vet today and they said it was not mites, nor allergies.... just an unknown secondary infection possibly caused by one larger solid bump adjacent. The large bump was biopsied and had 'spindle shaped cells' that he said was a concern but not cancer - but to watch to see if this growth grows rapidly here soon. Must be rapid - it was NOT there last week! ;0

We were sent home with cream and anti-biotic pills.

Before going to the vet it seemed like text-book mange!! or maybe folliculitis? But neither were mentioned today.

These bumps start off in a cluster - making their head all lumpy and gross. At first he looked wet, sticky. Then it turned into balding areas with raw flesh underneath. Very nasty. He's kind of clumsy so before in the past when he got these we thought 'oh, maybe he ran into the oven door or something'.... but now I'm just really concerned about what on earth these things are!!

The large lump is a concern - watching... they'll want to surgically remove it if it grows. Seems strange that it didn't exist before these lumps arrived last weekend.

Does anyone have experience to share? :D

I'll update on the epilepsy later too..... still playing with PX dosing... he hasn't gone more than 2 weeks without a seizure since the spring! Usually 1 a week.

    MANY thanks!!

  • That is really strange, and stranger that the vet doesn't know. Time for a specialist I think. I am so sorry he is going through all this. The continued seizures have to be frightening.

  • Thank you Debra, yes it's a mystery. I may have to take him to a skin doctor vet for the bumps if this doesn't clear up. Just so odd - as it's healing it feels like his skin is rough and bumpy like sand paper ?! As for the pills, they just keep checking his blood levels from the phenobarbital 2x a day and now increasing his Keppra to 3x a day. ;) He's a sweet heart, he doesn't deserve this......

  • It is hard because they don't understand, they just know they don't feel good. Hopefully they'll get the seizures under control.

I think a skin doctor may be the right move. :(

  • @DebraDownSouth indeed. He's a trooper though, so full of love and is a happy boy but our heart aches for him. I have a feeling that even if the bumps go away with the cream and pills....... they will come back. He had a couple bumps before that acted like these - but went away on their own. Is way worst this time. No mites, parasites or fleas..... he's all A-ok there. No valley fever..... he's had ever test ran already because of his epilepsy. Other than that he's super healthy! ;D

  • @Hana - Have you discussed with his breeder?

  • @tanza So far she knows all about his epilepsy journey, not the bumps yet as it's only been a week. But, yes I absolutely am going to ask her about it for advice and to let her know what's going on. Thank you for the reminder! Been so busy juggling pills and cream - and everything else in daily life. ;D I appreciate it!

She looks bigger than the weight you described- Id have her weighed again to make sure it wasn't a scale error. I randomly bring oakley in to the vet and they let me put him on the scale then leave. As far as the bumps- they looked like flea bites to me…..it's always wise to bathe the pup before using topicals (especially at such a young age). Since you've alteady applied a topical, next step would be to wash and vacuum the whole house....I use a human live comb to comb through Oakleys fur since it's black, places like the tail and base of tail, underarms and head are hotspots to find them- if you still don't aee relief then I would go back to the bets because of it's something environmental then you need to adjust

@ohbassit: Heya Buddys pal, The day after i posted the picture of her little lump it turned black and fell right off. Actually i am not sure when it fell off i just knew it wasn't there. The bump underneith also slowly went away. We have her penciled in for a vet visit this weekend so i will let you know what they say. Thanks for the concern! Cheers Could it have just been a blood blister or something like that?

We did a biopsy a week into it and it was not cancerous, so waiting for the bump to go away was the only other option. I though surgery would be too intrusive in the nose area. Kiya had to endure two weeks of wearing the cone day and night to prevent her from scratching her nose. She seems to get all kinds of things around her nose, just recently she got bitten by a bee nosing around in the grass and was back into the cone for a week.

How's Lenny's bump - did it go away? A few days after this post, I felt one on Daisy's left side on her rib cage. I thought it was wierd, but then last week, my husband said to feel the same area. It was a scab. I think she got bite by something. You know - summer bugs… Hoping Lenny's bump is gone now and he's feeling great...

Thanks for the info. We went thorugh when the bumps first appeared and tried to take away anything that had changed recently to make sure wasn't allergic to something new in his enviroment and he's not had any changes in routine since then. At this point, if it is an allergy in the house, it probably is to dust but he hasn't had that same huge breakout in bumps just a few here and there. I'll try some supplements and maybe change shampoos to something that says no soap as saw that on some other posts. He doesn't seem to be bothered much, just a little itchy and the hair might be somewhat more thin but he doesn't have bare spots. It's really hard to be patient though when I just want to know what is causing it! Thanks again!

My son also gets red bumps on his inner arms when he holds Magnum. Didn't help any to bathe him (Magnum, LOL!). They don't really seem to itch and go away fairly quickly. My son just doesn't pick him up much anymore. Magnum probably prefers that anyway!
