URGENT - Found Basenji

    I am crossposting the following here, trying to get word out to as many international Basenji people as possible. The dog is a red/white female, chip # is: 985120032622892 The dog has been found, and is being held in St. Petersburg, Russia. Anybody have any idea of what type of chip this may be, the thinking now is it may NOT be a USA chip, possibly UK.

    "A basenji has been found with USA microchip number. The basenji is not in the USA at this moment. Who can I contact to run the number to find her owner. It's urgent as finder can no longer keep and will be taking her to the pound soon. Any help is appreciated."

    The ISO are 15 numbers, which is the international standard.

    The chip was sold to Alpha Vet Ltd in Hungary. I tried to email them with the chip # to see if they know the vet that installed the chip. I haven't heard anything back yet.

    I have learned that the breeder of this Basenji has been found, she is in St. Petersburg, Russia. The owner has not been located as apparently the chip was never registered. Of course, a GOOD breeder would have that information but I'm not sure if anyone actually "knows" the breeder. Anyway, the dog has been taken to a no-kill type facility for now, and will not be going to the pound.. I'll let you know if I have any updates.

    I seen a post on BRaT that says she is not the breeder and does not know who the dog belongs to. The dog is at a safe home and will not be taken to the pound. I contacted Destron Fearing who manufactured the chip. They told me that the chip was sold to Alpha Vet Ltd in Hungary in 2007. I've sent emails to them and hope to hear back from them tomorrow.

    A good "safety" exercise to practice is a command that tells your dog treats are in the offing, and use it at irregular intervals when you are walking. Combine the command with a total release of pressure on the leash, preferably when your dog has firm tension on said leash. Then if something unexpected happens you have a built in reaction of the dog to look to you for a reward. This won't work if your dog is pursuing a major distraction, but should give you an edge if you have an equipment failure in otherwise neutral conditions. (you can carry this one step further by "accidentally" dropping the leash in a controlled area, or with a light line attached for safety, and practice until the dog turns to you when it feels a total release)

    Did Destro get home? I used the LostMyDoggie.com to place lost pet alert phone calls to 250 of my neighbors. I have not had any luck in finding my Dot yet (she climbed our fence on August 17), but I received several phone calls from people in my area asking about the basenji breed. It offered me some comfort and I knew that there were a lot of people looking for her. I will keep looking for Dot. I have gotten more search ideas from this forum tonight to help me. Please don't give up on Destro. They must be with some good person just out of our reach, so we have to keep looking a little farther away every day.

Often squeezing a dog's muzzle to alleviate play biting will have the opposite effect as well, as it charges a dog up even more. And FTR, rubbing a dog's face in anything is cruel, and ineffective teaching. Not one, single professional trainer that is up to date on current techniques would advocate that.
