Flea and Tick Treatment

Basenji Talk
  • I have a 5 year Basenji and a recent rescue 10 month old Vizsla, hound mix and I needing some advice. My basenji had been on triflexis for a couple of months and had a bad reaction (she was lethrgic) then we were using a topical medication that was not working , My vet gave me a new medicine, nexgard and I came home and researched it and i did not see any bad reviews. They have been on it for maybe 6 months or so . Well I looked it up again and saw some horrible reviews on the product. I discontinued my use. I live on an island in florida with alot of wildlife etc.. Any advice?

  • Nexgard is only a few years old, seems relatively safe, and if your dog is fine after 6 mos, it may be fine. However, if you feel uncomfortable, I'd suggest that you switch to frontline plus or advantage ... spray not top spot. Safe, been around a really long time. I always avoid new drugs until they have been around several years.

  • Thanks so much for the advice ! Your link had lots of good information. I appreciate It!

  • You are welcomed! My basenji has issues with heartgard, but if i give her antihistamines first and continue every 6 hrs, she's okay.

For Heartworm I use NuHeart ivermectin made in NZ. About $13.00 for a 6 pack of pills, available on line and without a scrip from the Vet. I give one pill every 5 to 6 weeks year roung. Or you can use liquid ivermectin, I believe the dose is 1/2 cc every 6 wks, even cheaper. For fleas/ticks I use Frontline Plus. Lucky that we don't have a real flea problem, so only have to use 2 or 3 times a year. I would not use any of the chewable flea meds, I do not believe they are safe

I used to use Frontline/Advantage on my males (both over the bridge now) but my female is super sensitive. These meds burned off her fur where applied! Now I use an herbal flea/tick spray made with citronella but it has to be sprayed (lightly will do) on her every day. I discovered, quite by accident, that it will kill fleas instantly. She caught a rabbit the other day and of course the fleas jumped ship and immediately started biting her - as soon as I sprayed she had relief.

When we have to deal with fleas, which is extremely seldom, I always use Adam's flea shampoo on the animals and their carpet spray on the carpets. I guess it's every 4 - 5 yrs we'll see a few fleas. The shampoo doesn't smell like insecticide, it leaves their coats soft, and is really effective. I know it's available coast to coast b/c my sister who used to work in an Army vet clinic in North Carolina is who got me using it here in Washington. It's the only product their clinic used – and I've noticed it the background in some of the clinics on the Animal Planet Animal Precinct shows, LOL

I use the advantix, but there is another one also. Since my cats cohabit downstairs and the dogs up this is not a problem. I still check for ticks though since they're very tough.
