puppy exhibiting behaviors that are questionable

  • He is doing three things that worry me: he is biting things he shouldnt, he is crying quite loudly in the crate, and he doesn't listen to me all the time

at night, for example, he will bite at the sheets and twist them and sometimes brings them up momentarily before bringing them down. I try to stop him by saying ''no'' but he usually goes ahead and bites me or the sheets. sometimes i',m able to make him bite a specific toy. someimes it works. But I'm wondering if its okay to let him bite since he is only around 8 months old. I try to direct his energy to the toy but he doesn't show interest most of the time. I'm wondering what I should do since I dont want him to chew up the sheets when he is older.

He also crys quite louldy when I put him in the crate. I take him out to do his business but he still crys at night. He always shakes his crate as he crys as wll. Just to let you know, he tends to shake and move his crate slightly during this period. I was wondering what I should do since I dont want him to think he is being punished. I want him to grow up knowing that he needs to go into the crate sometimes.

Also, when I call him he tends to ignore me usually. I also am able to beckon towards me when I make a noise and say ''good boy'' which is usually followed by ''good boy''.It seems as though he is following me sometimes when I call him but I want him to do it a majrity of the time. Should I expect him to ignore me sometimes since he is a basenji or should I expect him to come to me when called. I can feed him a treat when called to strengthen the 'call'.

  • Having an 8 mo old biting is a bad idea. Have you talked to his breeder?

Mary's page has easy to understand and follow training. Also more exercise. If you put a TIRED basenji into a crate, you'll have less issues. Also provide entertainment.. such as a kong, frozen with a smear of cream cheese or peanut butter so they stay occupied getting it out.
When he tears at sheets or bite, move him promptly and consistently and say a command such as "no bite" or "No chew", in stern voice, the totally ignore.

Please post pictures soon. We love sharing pics.

  • sorry, he is 8 weeks old. so it makes me think its normal to a certain extent. but I think I should be teaching him to release his energy on toys instead of furniture and what not.

Thanks for answering. When I take good pic, I'll post it.

  • I thought, wow did I read that wrong. Glad YOU put months not weeks, instead of me being senile!

At 8 weeks, they are going to use their mouths. :) It's a matter of training. At that age, you can gently wrap your fingers around the muzzle and say NO BITE and then ignore. Puppies crave attention and he WILL get it sooner rather than later that a bite means he loses attention.

  • They don't learn this in weeks.... takes months and that goes for any puppy, not just Basenjis

  • Is he biting at the sheets like a chew toy or is he trying to get under the sheets? My girl will pick the sheets up in her mouth and flip them up in the air to scoot under them. She will do this over and over again unpolished has the sheets exactly the way she likes it. It took her a while to "train" herself how to do it.

  • @margiem Yea, he bites his blanket. probably because he is still a puppy. He doesn't do it to cover himself.

This is an interesting thread. Any afghan owners notice this in their dogs as well? When Beo was younger, back when I was using the crate with him, when he would have a 'poop' accident he would take a blanket and use his nose to encircle said accident, didn't do the same thing with pee accidents….I don't know if it's the same thing or not, honestly I think he just wanted it as far away from him as possible. He still does this mounding behavior with like bones and the like; he'll use his nose and push a blanket or something on top of it, and then further us his nose to bunch it up into a relatively good looking circle shape. He won't have anything to do with dog feces now though ....he prefers to go in the bushiest/covered area he can find, and then wants absolutely nothing to do with it afterwards (I have to literally drag him through public areas where there's a lot of dog poop lying around).... It is kind of funny to see his "wide-eyed, EW! ICK!" reaction when he accidentally steps in some. Seems like it's more common for basenjis to half halfheartedly attempt to bury it, as opposed to take the time to cover it up with their noses?

Since Sonny joined the family three years ago its seems everyone has invested in a pub style table! my house, my parents & my brother. he can't reach so he doesn't even try. sometimes its just easier to out smart them! :D The two things that just overwhelm sonny are cheese and steak…he'll do anything to try and get it and I swear he blocks me out and is lost in a trance! ;)

@LBRunyon: I have a supplementary question along these same lines . We got our BRAT Ricky two weeks ago ( YIPPEE!!!! ) He is WONDERFUL . The only problem we are having is that he WILL NOT potty in our fenced in yard . In fact , it seems he won't go within 1 block of our house . We walk in the am and pm . He is very particular about where he will go, though he sniffs every available surface . While the weather is nice , I really don't mind this . We would be walking anyway . But when the frigid cold hits , it would be nice to open the door and have him go out , do his business quickly , and return . We have tried waiting him out in hopes of praise and treats once he goes in the yard . But Mr. iron- bladder- steel- sphincter WON'T go in the yard. Are there any suggestions ?Oh , by the way, once we are out of the yard and down the street he goes after a few quick sniffs . I have to take my B outside no matter what. It's nice during the spring/summer/fall, but the midst of winter is just simply brutal. -20F with a nice wind (colder windchill) will make any B go quickly, but it's still painful for us humans.

I think you should go back to your vets especially as this has been happenig ever since the emergency surgery. It could just be coincidence I suppose, but if she were mine I'd want to check. As Pat says more information is needed before suggestions can be given.

@JoeyQ: Yikes, have we done something really wrong??? Joey has not been aggresive at all. When we play with him he will "bite" our arms, but not hard. If we say "ow" or "no biting" he stops immediately. Should we not encourage this behavior? or is it ok to do when we are playing which has been the only time that Joey uses his mouth? We do the same thing. Alani will put her mouth around our arms but never bite down enough to even leave an indentation. However, sometimes she will grab a toy to play fetch and if I don't respond or tell her I don't want to play she will lay the toy across my arm and act like she's chewing on her toy but feel for where my skin is and start pinching it. I know she's doing it on purpose and she thinks she's so sneaky…but I know.
