    Hey there. We rescued a stray now about two years ago. He was the most adorable little thing. We hadn't a clue on dog breed until a coworker said he looked like a basenji mix. I was wondering if y'all might think the same.

    Behaviorally he does bark but he also does a very distinct whine to alert us to anything going on. It's something no dog i have ever had has done. He jumps super high and is definitely an escape artist. He won't leave our sides in the house following us around everywhere. The traits off are that he is 50+lbs and no curly tail. What do u think?

    such a nice boy! lovely ears, and that body and short tail, i see some basenji on him, a lot of.

    Something else to consider (not that you aren't welcome here!) I'm not positive of the basenji % of my own pup!

    The 50lb size and some of the other characteristics look something like these dogs - Carolina Dog. http://www.dogster.com/dog-breeds/Carolina_Dog

    Here is the breed description which sounds like a great dog and also has some characteristics similar to Bs.

    Just recently discovered in the wild, Carolina Dogs are still not a fully domesticated breed. However, these “wild dog” qualities blend together into a loving, cooperative and protective companion. Carolina Dogs are self-sufficient, intelligent and “pack” oriented, making them crave togetherness and family time above all else. They can be slightly reserved with strangers, but grow more outgoing over time. Carolina Dogs are great workers, herders and outstanding playmates for children.

    In the last photo I can see Basenji and the ears, though the bed would be shredded and not sleep in if he was a lot Basenji. Looks like a very sweet attentive boy.

    I don’t think you are, dang it and I want ALL the dogs to be Basenji! Still… great looking pup. Get a DNA test. If that pup has ANY Basenji in it, I’ll send you a beer. 👊😁👍

    @Buddys: Actually, my first B was found running around and was not altered. Always a possibility since the canine need of procreation is pretty darn high up there with food, water, and air…... Oh I'm sure it does happen and will continue to happen but I just don't see it happening as much as rescues claim it happens. I know for a fact some shelters (the one I worked at did!) will label dogs as rarer breeds to get them adopted faster. We had two scruffy "doodle" mix mutts and the animal warden INSISTED they were Wired haired pointing griffons. LOL.

    The traits you described are also found in most of the Nordic/spitz type dogs. I don't see anything overly basenji-ish about him in the pics. What ever he is, he's very hansome.

    @JulYEAH: Yeah, he does bark, but he also makes alot weird bizarro noises and is really vocal (not always barking). We have a rescue(r) dog who appeared on our side porch at 2:30 a.m. at about 3 months old. The vet has agreed she is probably a Basenji mix; however, she pointed out that DNA tests are notoriously expensive and inaccurate. Your dog certainly seems to carry the characteristics. Many people have approached us to ask if she is a Basenji. One of them is a man who works in Africa, where they are common. He first pointed out her curved tail. The body style, with the tiny waist, also seems to fit. And the SPEED is astounding. She is compelled to run, and has a nose that won't quit. She also makes weird noises: the classic "yodeling." Purebred Basenjis are said not to bark; however, I believe as a mix she got the best of both worlds. She follows every personality characteristic I have discovered about Basenjis: *Curved Tail *Narrow Waist *The ability to "yodel" *Social, But NOT Strictly a One-Owner dog - She loves everyone and will take a trip around the world before coming home if she escapes and has friends all over the neighborhood); *"Built-In Entrenching Tools" - She digs holes everywhere; *Excruciatingly Intelligent - She will sometimes contemplate whether a command is in her best interest before performing it. *Crazy-Brilliant "Hunting" Nose - She can sniff a squirrel, cat, or other intruder from three doors down and cannot rest until she has chased it away. The other part(s) of her heritage have remained a mystery. There is apparently a larger breed in the mix, as she is about 10 pounds heavier than a Basenji, with a wider facial structure. This morning I saw a picture of a Visla and had an "aha!" moment. We may both have the honor of owning Basenji-Visla mixes!

    Oh yeah, he looks way more like a b-mix to me than a lot of the pups listed as basenjis on Petfinder. And they mention he's not a barker. What a cutie! Someone go get this guy! :D
