Pictures of my basenji mix

  • I introduced myself and the dogs in the new members section but here are some pictures.

Basenji x Kanga (not sure what the x is - maybe whippet? ) is now 18 months or so and was rescued from a high kill shelter. The other dog pictures is my 7 yo JRT female who is a very low key JRT. I think the JRT raised a lot of puppies as she is super patient and loving to the basenji x even when the B first showed up and was a real fireball.

  • I see the basenji, but not the whippet part - no clue. But he's adorable and looks pretty fast to me. Maybe take him to a coursing?

  • Yep looks fast to me too! Very cute.

  • Pictures 2 and 3 look very basenji like to me, what a sweet JRT. They are lucky to have you and you are lucky to have them. So nice when they can enjoy each others company.

    Jolanda and Kaiser

  • that puppy looks very basenji-ish.

  • She does look very basenji - and behaves more like a basenji, than anything else. She is spot on 20 lbs - which seems maybe a bit small if she was mixed with whippet (?) She was described as basenji/whippet x by the pound but I once had a german shepherd puppy that the pound called a terrier x, so I think sometimes it is best guess based on what the dog looked like to someone at the moment.

She is longer than a basenji with a long straight tail and the ears are wide set and huge which may not be showing in the original pictures. Here are some other pictures that show her ears and more of her body.

I am not positive about the lure coursing as it is hard to know what will take her interest. Or if interested once, she may not do it again! Plus - she is not purebred - not sure if that matters.

  • Thanks! The B x had failed out of her original home as I believe she was way too much dog. I think she likes it here and is devoted to my JRT who is truly a sweetheart. And they play and play and then curl up together. I was slightly worried at first as they are both female and both breeds are not known for their pacifist natures. But the JRT has a very deep wellspring of patience and the B is not nasty just naughty. Fingers crossed that my good luck continues.

Only registered purebreds can do AKC or ASFA coursing. However you can register her with AKC as a mixed breed, then she can do the Coursing Ability Test (after she is 1 year old). The CAT is for all breeds and mixes too. It is the AKC Canine Partners registration. Go to www.akc.org and seach for Canine Partners program

  • I have a question. Our 3 B's are all adoptees (rescues), all are full Basenji, we've had them tested by the Wisdom Panel Purebred Certification Test, but have not the slightest clue as to their bloodlines. What do we do to get them approved for lure coursing?

  • First Basenji's

hey the pics are so sweet! maybe it is in the tail??? as the replies go-basenji=ish!!! cutie and cudos for the adoption!!!

For AKC, look into the ILP program. I have no idea about ASFA, but maybe once you have your ILP AKC number, you can transfer to ASFA

Hi everyone, Thanks for all of your replies! Rex just had his first vet visit (first with me at least), and he was given a clean bill of health. The vet that I saw also agrees with a lot of you that he looks like a Min Pin more than a Basenji, but he is likely still mixed with something because he's a bit too big to be a pure Min Pin. I've looked at a few DNA Dog Breed tests online, and they seem to range in price and in quality. It seems like some of the cheaper (~$50) tests are fake, but they go all the way up to almost $250 for the higher quality ones. Do any of you have experience with these DNA tests / have a brand you found reputable? I'll be sure to post the results of any of the tests with this forum! Thanks again, and Rex is doing really great in his new home!! [image: 1559586518913-img_3707-resized.jpg] [image: 1559586546977-img_3720-resized.jpg] [image: 1559586568474-img_3708-resized.jpg]

She was only 16 pounds when I took her to the vet last but I know she is more now. She was also malnourished when we got her, she is gaining weight but she is still skinny. I made a photo album with some better pictures. I'll add more as I'm still searching through pictures on my camera to find some side views. But right now I'm off cause she is complaining that I'm ignoring her and not throwing the ball! :)

Rafismom, we started him out in a crate, but he hated it. Cried something fierce. We then started leaving him in my son's room, and he was absolutely fine….well, until he started crying again. Then we gave him roam of the house while we were gone, and have had no problems at all. Yes, I know. I'm lucky! He absolutely hates for us to leave, but he's good while we are gone. No complaints here, for sure. Maybe it's the possible black lab that mixed in that makes him so calm? He has his moments, especially outside when he sees a squirrel, etc., but overall he's a very calm pooch. Just last week, I was walking the dog at a local park when I hear a woman saying something about the dog. She was a good distance away. I then realize she was talking to me and asked if my dog was friendly. I said, "yes" and she came over to pet him. She told me that the dog reminded her of her first dog. She said her first dog was a basenji. After more chatting, she said that it was actually a basenji mix, but that my dog looked a lot like hers. She told me how much she loved that dog and told me all sorts of stories about her. Such a nice lady. Gave me a few bits of advice and about a half hour later we parted ways. This is my first dog, and I've been amazed at how friendly other dog people are when I'm walking him. This has been a great experience.
