My separation anxiety…

Basenji Talk

  • My friends are taking me for a Surprise Birthday Weekend, so Butu is in kennels, having a great time (last seen running around like a lunatic with a Westie called Pippin..) I am at home, missing him. I have opened all the doors of the rooms he's not allowed in, which is Nice and Convenient, but I still Miss The Boy

  • Aww, I feel bad for you. The first time I had to leave Becca at a kennel, I cried!!! But they took good care of her and after that it was almost like freedom…LOL.

  • I think we are the ones that suffer not them, they may miss us but then they have friends to play with and when they get home they get spoiled, a win win situation for them. Planning on a holiday next year so will be going through the same thing, first time away from Kaiser and I am such a worry wart will be checking in on him that's for sure.

    Jolanda and Kaiser

  • Knowing you are going to go away, I'd put Kaiser at the kennel for an overnighter a time or 2 so he gets used to it if you can. It will help him be less stressed about the longer time and you more confident that he'll be okay.

LOL on Separation Anxiety. When I have a pet sitter, I am less stressed since I know they are content, which frankly many dogs are NOT when suddenly boarded with a lot of other animals. But yep, I still miss them.

  • I know how you feel!! Whenever my husband and I go on vacation, by the end of the trip we are so anxious to get home to see our Bs. Oddly enough, my male, Jubilee, does better at the kennel than at home with a pet-sitter. His separation anxiety is worse at home than away.

  • Max mite know that Westies named Pippin.

  • I am in the UK, Tp3, so maybe not…

@organicshadows - Don't feel judged, that is not what we are doing... just as been said, just honest opinions. And many, much, all of the things we have talked about goes for all breeds, not just Basenjis. And I laid out what I have done, because I could... the main point I wanted to make is that Basenji (and Whippet also for that matter since they are both sight hounds) is that they like windows to watch the world go by. And by window, NO blinds or you will find that redecorated as so to see out. Just as a point, I have friends that had many years ago a West Highland White Terrier, they lived in an apartment and she was the best pup... then they rearranged the room and she started to eat holes in the rug... until they figured out that they blocked her view of the outside... being bored in the house she showed her displeasure by eating holes in the rug. They put the room back the way it was and that all stopped period. The pup was happy! Just something to keep in mind.

We got him 2 months ago when he was a little over one. Thanks for all the suggestions! I am going to go out for a short time and come back, lengthen the time and also try the crate and Kong. He never goes when we are home so maybe it’s his way of saying if you do not want a mess, don’t leave me alone!!

Glad all went well! Ah sorry skype depressed him. Mine were confused that I had my daughter trapped in that box but they were overjoyed to see her.

I was thinking about it, and it may not be the actual noise that bothers him. The fireworks in July didn't bother him, and neither did the parade (firetruck sirens, marching bands, and all) that recently went by our house. It may be the vibrations. We are close enough to the base that our house actually shakes enough to knock the pictures and stuff off of the walls (we actually quit hanging photos on our walls because we had replaced so many frames). I'm still going to try some of the suggestions and will definitely figure out a new schedule for him. Thanks again.

Poor boy. I've never had to deal with that…it sounds like you've done just about everything you can. I wonder if taping your voices or making video of yourselves doing everyday things and playing it while you're gone would ease his anxiety a little? It's a just a thought.....
