Question about Flea and Tick prevention.

    Now that the warm weather is here we are hoping that the fleas and ticks won't be as bad as last year. We are rteally curious as to what is supposed to be the best and most effective for our B's. They are all free of heart worms and we check the 3 of them for ticks whenever they have been outside playing. What we really would like to know is if there is a topical flea and tick preventative that is reccommended for B's, since our 3 are always grooming each other, specially Baroo and Buddy. And I've never really been high on any given internally. If anyone has a suggestion, please pass it on to us, Thanks.

    i cant say, i live on Mexico, here is a must! we have warm weather all year, and here on my city we have some really bad fleas.. so i use frontline and works super nice. If frontline can works with these evil fleas, i think will be a party on your place

    I have almost exclusively used Frontline and frontline plus since it came out about 20 yrs ago. I switched to advantage one year but when back to frontline. I prefer the spray on formula. That said, I haven't had more than one flea in years. I treated dogs and yard and house when we moved here, treated the dogs every 3 mos. The next year, the next year, then I realized I hadn't SEEN any fleas the last year. So I treated the dogs in April and then in Oct as a preventative. Did that for a few years but never saw another flea unless I brought in a rescue. I keep a flea comb and check them often but they think it's just to annoy them as there are never fleas. So Frontline helped me kill those in my environment and they haven't moved back in. Oh except when they cleared a huge area near me and we got fleas, mice, possums…. sigh. But that was only that one summer, none since.

    I also use frontline spray, it's easy to use a minimal amount and I spray Kaiser mainly along his back where he can't lick, he runs around like a nutter so will have to confine him next time as it was hit and miss last time as I was thinking if I did it outside he wouldn't smell it so much, wrong he hated the spray sound and the smell, did make me laugh heaps him running around like a crazy dog and me trying to spray him as he ran past. Have always only used it more through summer( especially with the cats snoozing outside then) and hardly through winter but he seems to pick up fleas on our walks so need to get a flea comb. Don't really like using anything but don't like fleas either.

    My boyfriend and I got our Basenji in February, and he's 9 months now. We did our research, used positive reinforcement training, crated him at night until he was potty trained and then let him sleep in the bed with us, and we had extensive play sessions with him in the mornings and walked him until he (or we!) got tired in the afternoon/evening. He's crated for a few hours during the day when both of us are at work; we live in a small apartment with no room for an x-pen, and are considering doing some test runs with leaving him free in the apartment, because he hasn't been destructive the few times that he has escaped his crate. Result: he sticks to us like glue. Though we rarely get to let him off-leash anywhere, he likes to keep us in sight and keeps a watchful eye on strangers who come near us both in and out of the house. We still have playtime with him in the morning (anywhere between 30 mins and 1 and a half hours of fetch, tug-o-war, chasing, and the Basenji500), and we try our hardest to give him a good long walk before we go to bed. He's okay with the crate, though he doesn't hang out in it of his own free will, but he tolerates it for when we're gone. His most destructive times are in the morning when he wakes up before us and decides to see if we were silly enough to leave any clothing or paper in his reach to shred up (we've lost money, a deck of cards, shoes, underwear, shirts, bookbags, etc.), and in the afternoon when one or both of us happens to be home but not paying attention to him, so he starts tugging on drapes, bedding, even the carpet - but more to get our attention than actually ruin anything. It's work, but Paco makes it worth it in the end with cuddles, doggy-smiles, and never-ending enthusiasm!

    @saralars: This is off the subject of crate escape… I was told growing up that turkey and chicken bones were very dangerous for dogs. Are Basenjis different in this way too? Or am I missing something... Raw, uncooked bones are fine for any dog, not just Basenjis… it is "cooked" bones that are the problems

    Home is a dog's "territory" and sometimes they will protect it as such (especially against other dogs)… Possibly the breeder is concerned this would be an issue. Maybe she would consider meeting somewhere "neutral" with you and some of the dogs...

    My husband and I have both been in 9yrs And with bugs,lol, best thing for anywhere: ensure they don't have hiding spots and use flea and tick meds

    HOW CUTE!!! I love the one ear up & one down…I wish mine could do that!! Definitely something senji about this little guy but rest assured he's 100% CUTE

    Sanitized bone should be fine… however like you said, these days I would not trust the "goo"... .... especially now that they have found that for many of the foods that "claimed" they didn't have rice, wheat, corn as the protein source, they really did.... or on the package it was listed as "protein source" that turned to be one of the above glutens...
