Bad news for Ayo. Bladder stones in urethra

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Thanks for all the info.. Will check the PH….

  • I will try to find the results I got from Johnny, it does have some suggestions for lessening the incidence of stones. You'll never completely get rid of them, but it doesn't hurt to keep them in check.

  • Thanks….......

  • Ayo was having trouble urinating again last noght, and this morning it got worse , so back we went to the vet where a new x ray revealed another stone , stuck in the urethra. I am very confused becuase, fist of all why does he have one a few days after surgery and why is it stuck, i thoight the purpose of the urethrostomy was ao the stones would not get stuck. They emptied his bladder with a, i dnt know what that is called in english, a thin tube that they insert through the urethra into the bladder. he is now urinating better, but the stone didnt move much. he is not comepletetly blocked. but i am waiting to hear from the doctor, who wasnt there and was unreachable.. To see what we should do next….. Im so frustrated!!!.. Here's a picture of the xray...

  • Sorry dont know why the fotos areupside down and side ways…..

  • Poor thing. i wish i had something helpful to say.
    hopefully he's doing better now.
i've missed having the b-forums around

  • Do please let us know how Ayo is getting on…

  • Sorry I had not posted but a lot has happened. Ayo ended up having another surgery. The new stone was pushed back to the bladder and they proceeded to take it out from there but in the middle of the surgery it slipped back into the urethra, so they had to go ahead and do the full scrotal urethrostomy, which is what he should have had in the first place. He was neutered and now the opening is in the best place and is bigger so he should be able to always pass the stones without problem , as do bitches when they have this condition. He was pretty beat up for a few days. I feel terribel for having put him through two surgeries. he is still bleeding a little bit after he urinates. But pther than that he is doing very well. he is back to normal, chasing evrything that moves, messing with my cats, who were happy to be left alone for a few days. So I know he is getting better. Tomorrow he gets the last few stitches removed and ankther blood test .

  • poor boy. i'm glad it sounds like he's mending and that should take care fo things.

  • Glad your poor boy is getting back to normal, what a rough time he has had and you too. Wishing you all the best.

I have not been on the forum for awhile and am sad to read about Spencer. I know how much you loved him and he is now free of pain. Jennifer

Shelley, Bungwa is one of my males from my last litter, he is named after Bungwa of Blean. His full name is Antefaa Bungwa Forest Glory. I've not been in a hurry to get my males tested as I don't intend to breed again. However I get stud enquiries so couldn't consider accepting until he is tested and this applies to my 3 males. You may meet him at the NBS sometime but as you may know I'm not ultra keen on showing. Does any one know whether Gary Johnston has published the details of the direct test as I want to forward the link to Jeff Sampson of the UK Kennel Club? They'll obviosly require published information.

@Kipawa: Good results! :) And kudos to you for starting strip testing next year. Kipawa will either be clear or carrier. I'm going to send away for the test soon. You hope. Please remember the test is linkage, not clear genetic. While your chances are VERY good for clear or carrier, keep in mind that isn't 100 percent sure.

Funny you guys mention this as today Dallas had his third vet appointment for his puppy shots [rabies, etc] & when the vet found out I was feeding Merrick's he didn't like it. He kept trying to convince me that Purina, Euk & Science Diet are the best & that Merrick's is too new to really have the quality of food that Euk & the others have been "perfecting for centuries". I like this guy but it kind of annoyed me actually. He said he would switch him back to Euk if he were me & also said that if I choose to stay with Merrick's I should at least have him on their puppy blend not the regular because of the extra stuff pups need. I didn't bother to mention the fact that adult Merrick's have more protein, fat, etc than any commerical puppy kibble  Less fillers & more concentrated…sounds better in my opinion. Oh & also, I mentioned adding fish oil to his kibble & he said it "wasn't necessary" & that his dry skin in his ears is because I am swbbing them too frequently. That actually may be the case [too much cleaning on my part] but the fish oil could never hurt right?

@agilebasenji: Sounds like you definately need a specialist of some sort. Also, you may want to try Slippery Elm instead of Immodium or Pepto. http://www.botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/e/elmsli09.html http://health.howstuffworks.com/slippery-elm-herbal-remedies.htm http://www.littlebigcat.com/index.php?action=library&act=show&item=slipperyelm **The last link is about using it in pets. And it should be available as a powder or in capsule form at your local health food/green grocery. Thanks for that link. Never heard of it used in pets before, but now I'll be keeping some on hand. Excellent!
