Puppy crying in crate

    Hi everyone,

    my pup is almost 3 month, we have it now for 2 weeks and at night she is in a crate and shes crying. Day time and night time, but worst on day time

    So my question is, they can cry like that until what age ? I was told 3 days and it will be fine if you ignored her, but after 2 weeks im still waiting for this to happen. Then i had someone who told me a month so im not sure. Maybe im there is something im not doing right

    Shes crying 15 - 20 min at night then shes ok for all night but she hate so much her crate that she pee and sleep in it.

    *- Before someone ask me why i'm using a crate, the answer is: im using one until i will trust her enough not to pee everywhere and chew anything she find. So until then crate and im not ready to try something else

    This is what id do:

    • I never let her out the crate when shes crying, im waiting at least 5 straight minute then i let her out
    • Im trying to let her go inside by herself but its almost impossible so i put her inside and give her treat and some bone to chew
    • i never let her more than 3 hours at the exception of the night

    Try a warm water bottle or a clock that ticks. Where did you get her from? Have you talked to your breeder about it? Crate training is very useful so keep it up! It almost sounds a little like separation anxiety.

    Crate training is a very useful thing so don't give up.Give meals in her crate, we also had a snuggle safe to keep ours warm, breeder had already introduced our boy to the crate so he was really good so maybe your girl wasn't so it's harder for her, less to drink at night and outside to pee the latest you can. Otherwise sounds like you are doing the right things, but I wouldn't wait 5 minutes of no crying before I let her out that seems quite a while I used to wait till mine was quiet and calm and then he was allowed out.     Alright thx for the info, i will try these trick starting tomorrow.
    I did talk to the breeder, i actually have her on Facebook, shes very nice but it's not the same because her all the baby were sleeping together. So like you said, probably only separation anxiety.

    I'll try to warm bottle as well seem like a good idea !

    Where is her crate at night? Puppies don't like to be alone, so if the crate is close to your bed that would be better. If you find she is restless, you can get up and take her out. This may help with the peeing. Last time I had a puppy (and that was a few years ago) she was housebroken very quickly because the crate was right beside me at night and I took her out when needed. Within a couple of weeks she was sleeping with me in my bed, and I continued to take her out when necessary. I had very few accidents with that girl! And is there any chance she is cold? Basenjis like to be warm, and as you say she has been used to sleeping with other puppies. The warm water bottle will help, but overnight it will cool off.

    Honestly, sounds to me like too much crate time… which is now making her hate the crate.... I alway tell my puppy people, you have to decided which, if you have to crate during the day then at night they need to be with you, including sleeping. If they can have a safe place, not crated during the day when you are working (if you do work) and access to a litter box (to potty) or outdoors, then crating at night. I also would not wait 5 minutes after a crying jag... too long (IMO)
    When you are home they want to be with you, they don't want to be in the crate. So you need to be more aware of watching them and getting them outside to potty or watching them and what they might be chewing

    I hear D.A.P works well with "puppies". Never tried it myself with one though.

    In addition to all of the above posts, there are definitely basenjis who will not be crated. I have one. Went through all the correct procedures trying to crate Shaye as a new puppy. We got her a wire crate, the right size, put a soft piece of our clothing in it, put it next to our bed at first so we could touch her through the bars - she screamed all the time she was in there, did her business wih her butt against the side so it would go outside, peed all over the place and sat in it, even though we were very slow and careful with it. The eventual result was she broke nearly all her baby teeth biting the crate, never calmed down in it, would not go in to eat, get treats or anything else. Her personality has never changed; she still backs off if she even sees crates other dogs are sleeping in. She is now nearly five, and she does not act like that when she needs to be kenneled at a daycare place, she seems to know it's different there, although if possible she will try to climb her way out at first. When she cannot, she will calm down and rest for the hour they put her in there during the day. Be patient, but if it just never works, so be it. Once Shaye got a little older and we got her a companion, she has been totally trustworthy while we are gone.

    @lvoss: It has been raining most of the day here and L'Ox has been unenthusiastic to say the least about going outside. He has been doing really well on potty training and is starting to ask to go out but you could tell every time he actually got outside he was horrified by all the wet. So his remedy was to run to the edge of the covered porch and pee and rush back in. His dilemma was how to do the rest of his business without melting in the rain? So while I was in the kitchen gathering up the dog dishes I hear a clatter and see a little puppy butt escaping into the garage through the cat door. I follow him out there only to find him pooping near the cat's litter box. I guess I should be glad that he seems to be using his brain for good rather than evil right now. My little girl was like that but got out of the habit. She realized that going in the house was naughty (she wouldn't go on the toilet training mats we got her) and even though she hated her feet wet she went on the grass anyway and when she came inside she did the basenji thing and she licked it off her feet.

    Indy has a "Large" size wire crate from walmart. We decked it out with a king size comforter, two fleece blankets, and a life size "puppy" stuffed animal. Then we throw in a deer antler and two of his favorite stuffed toys and tell him to have at it. So far no problems. The other cool thing about this crate is that dh made him a "deck" ontop. We put the kennel next to the couch so he can climb up the top and onto the deck. He hangs out there and looks out the window all day long sometimes. When he was younger we put the divider in, but once he showed us that he knew pottying in his crate was not ok we just let him have all the room. So far so good.

    mia is 5 months old today.. and i have classes from 8am-145pm without a break long enough to come home. plus an hour total of travel time. shes fine in her crate for 7 hours. and shes done that since we first got her when she was 8 weeks old. granted its only 2x a week. we've started leaving her out if we go to dinner or something like that.. and she doesnt potty in the house then either. she can hold it for quite awhile. but i guess every dog is different

    My husband was afraid that Cooper was "my" dog at first, but things really evened out after we went through training as a family. Now, Cooper is attached to me during the day (when I have days off), and glues himself to Geoff after dinner every night. He still walks and rides in the car better with me, though. And I'm the only one who can brush his teeth!
