Interesting fact i found out about my basenji

Basenji Talk
  • @meaghanmplatt:

My B's tail uncurls when he is completely passed-out…that's when I know I can mess with him and he won't wake up...hahaha

It is interesting that some do and some don't. The one thing I'm finding out about B's, they're very different in so many different ways!

  • Whenever my Savannah gets scared, it uncurls. The other day we were at the park watching my step son play baseball and I guess she was a little unsure of her surroundings and it was uncurled. My husband picked it up and it went back on her back curled.

  • Abbey's tail stays in a tight little curl when she's asleep. One day at the park she was surrounded by big dogs and she tucked her bottom down and her tail went completely limp. Curled right back up again when the dogs left!

  • Jojo's tail will relax when she is stretched out relaxing or sleeping but the white tip always has a little curl to it. My favorite thing about the curled tail is her wagging it when she is happy to see someone…

  • All my B's tails uncurl when sleeping… Kristii's does stay curled at the very end, but she has a very tight "kink" at that end.....

Also as they age the tails get Loose....

  • The tails looses with age? Very interesting. So when people talk about they're B's tail uncurling, does it uncurl all the way? Like B-Boy Alanis would have to be broken to uncurl. It relaxes a little but the tip is always curled.

  • Two have no kinks in the tail at all and can make their tail completely limp. Two have a little kink at the very end…....it's always there, but the tail can relax.
Two have kinks so tight, you couldn't straighten it......and those two just hate for you to even touch their tail.

  • Yeah, Alani has a very tight kink on the tip. She relaxes that when she's deep in thought (I know I can get this apart, I know I can) or when she's sleeping. She also hate when you touch the kink. She doesn't mind the rest of the tail.

  • Tana's uncurls when he's relaxed.

Funny that different basenji's un/curl in different, seemingly opposite situations- some when they're scared and some when they're relaxed.

  • Corky's sometimes uncurls when he's sleeping and sometimes when he is comfortable. I can always tell if he's really OK with someone. If his tail is uncurled, they're OK by Corky!

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

@fjd89 Always good to do health testing.... Don't know about how hip testing is done overseas. You would need to check with your local Vets.

There's nothing like a basenji in the works, from the way they instinctively lay with their had on the bum looking the other way ( I've never met a B that doesn't) to the way you KNOW they all rub on wet towels or play bow…it's all very endearing and in this breed you often identify traits that they all have, an insight into their genetics and their behaviors. I've never enjoyed a breed so much.

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

@phoenix3: Looks like a B to me but i think more of a B mix he looks like he has corse hair Maybe be has the size of a cattledog body and a basenji head :) My Aspen is a cattledog/ terrier mix he has the body of a cattledog {the colors} and the height and face of a terrier heres a pic so u can see the colors of the cattledog well one color anyways :D :D phoenix3 - this is Aspen? I'm so amazed at her spots, because my Daisy has spots like Aspens. We know her mother is pure R/W Basenji and she is thought her other half Beagle. One of her other litter mate moms thought Blue Healer (cattledog). But I subscribed to the Beagle. Daisy could be … Cattle Dog I suppose. She's bigger than Duke now at almost 9 months old. I will show her off soon on "Show Off" forum soon.
