Bad day at the dog park :(

    I couldn't agree more. I do go to the parks often but we scope them out carefully first. My biggest issue is people allowing their dog to approach Dash on leash. I repeat-he's aggressive, he bites and they are just oblivious.

    I agree…especially the pet store :eek: With all the food around & doggy items there's no wonder there aren't more accidents at these stores.

    I've got serious allergies to pet dander so it makes going shopping a real PIA! And don't get me started on off leash dog parks...I just don't trust a lot of owners.

    …The dog park has been great practice towards the dog beach! The past couple of times we have been to the dog beach have been amazing. My boy is now brave enough to get his feet wet all on his own!
    Has anyone else experienced the dog beach?;-)

    Our tri loves to sit on the end of our kayak on a lake we go to (supervised with someone close if he falls in the shallow water). He used to sit on a raft in our kiddie pool. He goes in the water of our pond to a certain depth. We ended up not encouraging his tolerance of water because he would get water in his ears and get ear infections.

    Never been to a dog beach but we plan to next month…I'm hoping they'll like it as much as I DO :D :D

    What's with the fear of going in the water?? Can B's not swim? I thought all dogs could swim??

    All dog's cannot swim. I had a dog once who sunk like a stone.

    I think I read bulldogs can't swim. So pugs might be the same?

    Maybe, but you have to remember bulldogs heads probably weigh quite a bit considering they're mostly bone.

    When Cairo was coming into his manhood which was around the later part of his 4th month he began to try to dominate every dog (male or female) at the dog part. We were in the smaller dog pen, so there were plenty of smaller dogs for him to dominate. I recognized the behavior (not full mounted, but the arm on the back) and we didnt go back until he was fixed. Major difference.

    I would suggest going to a Petsmart and doing your normal commands there. It is so busy and loud there that you can practice getting his attention.

    Having an intact dog at the dog park is a big challenge. You dont want to take treats into a dog park in case some one else's dog is food aggressive and you have to feel confident you can pull his attention away from his interest when you want.

    I would think any kind of training that included socializing with other dogs would be a big help.

    Well, I went to the dog park again. It was actually kinda boring. Only one other guy there with 2 little, shaved white dogs. He was not talkative at all and after the initial sniff, the dogs pretty much ignored on another. It was kinda hot (90 degrees) + humid + around dinner time so I wasn't really surprised. I was gonna leave when I, with the sun in my eyes, saw someone showing up with a dog with a curly tail and pointy ears. I thought, "OMG, is that a basenji, can't leave now." Turns out it was a Shiba-Inu. Cute dog. I thought, "Hey, maybe we'll get something here, playwise." No such luck, again, ignoring after the initial sniff. Oh well, it still made a tired basenji, which is good. I will go back again. Oh, and DolceMomma, this park also separates small and large. But the "large" dog area is so-o much nicer than the small dog area. First time, we started in the "small" dog area, alone, five minutes, went into the "large" dog area, 'cause that's where everyone else was. I just think this is a good way for my boy to get socialized. But I am/will be vigilant.

    They just opened a new park built on a retired landfill that has not one but TWO areas for dog parks, so when one gets run down, they'll open the other and close the first to allow grass to regrow, etc. She-Ra loves it, too, because unlike the other parks this one is wide open and has TONS of running room. Dream come true for us, but it'll still get hot in the summertime, I'm sure.

    She-Ra goes to our local park at least twice a week. It's a nice area with a sectioned-off area for smaller dogs or if a dog is having "behavior issues" you can take it in there if there's no other dogs. A lot of "regulars" maintain law and order if a dog owner is getting out of line (allowing their dog to bully, etc.). She enjoys it. Runs in to do her business really quick. Sniffs everyone, but hates it when other sniff her. There'll be the occasional "give me space" growl if too many dogs get around her at once and sniff. Spends most of the time sniffing and standing in the middle of the park staring like a statue at something. Then you get the eventual chase going - those are always fun because the other owners are like 'Oh, She-Ra's gonna get caught!' and I grin and say 'No she's not.' as she runs circles around all the other dogs. I love watching my dog run…it's poetry in motion. After about an hour she's pooped and ready to go back home. We've had very few incidents with her that haven't been swiftly fixed. She seems to enjoy going quite a bit, and we're making friends with some of the regulars...I guess we're fairly regular now by this point as well.

    Lol…sorry to laugh but I was walking Indy the other day and for some strange reason there was a pair of socks in the middle of the side walk. Needless to say he saw it before I did. He raced up to it grabbed them and was starting his best show dog prance by the time I saw him.

    that's terrible. i hope Harley doesn't have any lasting trauma from the incident.

    That is a great idea, but it should be an adolescent for sure (seems to be the most trying stage). My mom also really liked our dog (the look, the no bark, typical things most people like) and she quickly changed her ideas. We were telling her about the time we had to babysit another dog and the things she did to let us know that she did not like another dog in our house (she did some very naughty things)! My mom said 'wow she is really a manipulating dog'. I said, yeah they are definately not a breed for everyone.
