Lucky and her crate –--- problem...

    I have had lucky for 2 days now and she has a good relationship with her crate when it is both open and closed. However, this is only when someone is near. As soon as me or my sister leave, she starts making lots of noise and trying to get out. Any suggestions?

    Give her time! Some basenjis take months to get used to the being in a kennel in a new home. I would email her breeder as she probably knows her best and can give you better advice for this particular puppy.

    Perfectly normal. It takes time for a pack animal to get used to being alone. If you want her to give up making noises and trying to escape, don't make the mistake of "rescuing" her when she is making a fuss. Initially, as soon as she is quiet, go back and take her out. Rinse, repeat. Increase the time alone gradually, and make sure she has some playthings or food to amuse her. Hopefully she will grow to tolerate the situation.

    Build her confidence by leaving her alone in the room (not in the crate) for a minute, then 2, 3 etc.
    You can also just open and close the living room door repeatedly at short interavals, and the front door, but staying with her.
    All this to break the association CRATE = ALONE = BAD

    I would do that but the rooms in my house that she is staying in are archways and only the bedrooms and bathrooms have doors. However, she likes her create! that's whats confusing. She will go in, lay down, sleep, chew a bone, and sometimes when we leave she is quite. Its only at night when we let her out for her last potty break at 12:30 and in the morning for her first at 5:00

    Kaiser did moaning mostly and some wailing as a puppy at bedtime for the first two days and then just a few minutes of moaning but was surprising good within a week, just make sure you have something warm in the crate, snugglesafe, covered hotwater bottle, pet electric blanket just make sure it's safe, put a blanket over her. It may just be coming out of a warm place and going back to a cold one and doing a moan about it. Even now if we go out Kaiser sometimes has a bit of a moan to say hey I want to come, but I have video of him and he hears the car go and just goes to sleep. Maybe she is doing the same, while she can hear you she does it and then settles when alone, are you able to video her to see what she does and then you can relax and ignore her knowing she is doing the normal thing and not going crazy and hurting herself.     Crates for bedtime should be in the same room you sleep in… especially with a puppy... if you are rooms away, how would you have any idea that he/she is having a problem? And if you are home, the pup should be with you... and you should be watching him/her.... every minute... the crate is not for your pleasure, so you can do other things... .... or you are bored with watching them every minute.. Certainly if you have to crate when you are out of the house.. that is one thing... but if you are home, they are totally tuned into you being there. If they fall asleep as puppies will do, you can pick them up and put them in the crate... just leave the door open.. and go about your business... but check on the very often.... I have raised many a litter that they are in our family room crashed out or on the back porch for hours sleeping... I can get stuff done while they sleep.. but I keep the eagle eye on them all the time..

    One thing that MIGHT help is to really exercise and wear her out before you go out. But I do think obedience classes will be a great boon for both her listening during distractions and being around other dogs. It would be very helpful if you can find a few buddies that will go walk with you ... keeping the dogs on leash, separated, but just strolling around getting used to being around but not playing with another dog. You may get a lot more out of it if you have obedience well underway first, so that you are fine tuning her there. Mary's site has just about every basic training, and she is simple and easy to understand. http://www.clickerlessons.com/index.htm Okay so on your dog mix... If you can afford it, I'd do a wisdom panel. It isn't cheap, but it is excellent. I hope for your sanity they find your dog is NOT actually a Carolina dog because ouch. Both basenjis and carolina dogs are "primitives"... and although Basenji DNA is more consistent than the Carolina dog (which has a lot of other breeds mixed in since they lived wild in the USA with a lot of other breeds around to mate with, whereas until recent times Basenjis were more isolated from other groups), you've got a double dose of "yeah maybe I'll listen, maybe I won't... and I really am good at running off and doing my own thing." Having the DNA might help show how much of the primitive genes are in there. Sadly the Wisdom Panel doesn't test for Carolina dog as a breed, and I can't find any that do. But they can look for those primitive lines. That said, having lived in SC and living in GA, I have met a few Carolina dogs. Obviously with my love for Basenjis and Chows, I'm fond of the primitives. But you have to train smart. Really glad you found the forum, will be fun watching her mature!

    No, Pat - she had them separated for at least 2.5 weeks (maybe longer). I don't take him out immediately when I see he has peed, because often he is sleeping - I put him in his crate and don't watch him, but go about my business or leave the house for a short time, then when I return, he has peed. Or, he does it when one of us comes down to let him out in the morning or in the middle of the night. I think I was wrong with what I said before about it being a longer time after feeding that he pees (or maybe it is just sometimes) - tonight, I fed him in his crate with no bedding, so I could observe what happened. Sure enough, 3 minutes after eating, he pees. I did remove him, mop it up, put in clean bedding, then put him back in, where he curled up and went to sleep. Should I consider feeding him out of his crate for now? ANY suggestions are really welcome. His sister is doing great with housebreaking. They are both incredibly easy to train on everything else - 5 minutes with a clicker today and they run and jump in their beds at the command "place." I don't notice any of the littermate codependence stuff - being very vigilant. We can separate them with no problem - walk them separately, train them separately (and together). They like to be with us as much or more as with each other. This housebreaking thing is my biggest anxiety right now. Keep any suggestions/advice coming… Please. Thanks in advance.

    @Gabriel: I have a small travel type crate that I put Noel in while we are away from home and at night. she is 14 weeks. She is really getting to big for this. What types of crates do you keep your B's in? I am looking at a medium size cage type kennel. 30L x 19W x 21H inches I want to be sure she has plenty of room to lay down in it. What is your advice? i got a crate big enough 4 a large dog. like a lab or something simular. I had 2 get the travel crate because in a wire crate she would pull things into the crate and eat it. comforters rugs you name it. She even ate her bed. fluff everywhere.

    The only reasons I would not crate little bs with big bs is (1) I don't want any fighting so you would have to play that one by ear (2) If the little one potties in the crate accidentally the big b has to suffer too. But I only have 1 so thats all I could think of

    Indy has a "Large" size wire crate from walmart. We decked it out with a king size comforter, two fleece blankets, and a life size "puppy" stuffed animal. Then we throw in a deer antler and two of his favorite stuffed toys and tell him to have at it. So far no problems. The other cool thing about this crate is that dh made him a "deck" ontop. We put the kennel next to the couch so he can climb up the top and onto the deck. He hangs out there and looks out the window all day long sometimes. When he was younger we put the divider in, but once he showed us that he knew pottying in his crate was not ok we just let him have all the room. So far so good.
