  • Hi All,

I'm new here. I found this site while just browsing around the web like I often do and reading about Basenjis, like I don't know enough already. I've had Izzy for 5 years now. She's quite a handful. She can open the oven, child safety locks, scale a 4' fence, dig under a fence, destroy a bed, destroy a couch, and wear down dogs three times her size. She's also very sweet, when she wants to be, cute as anything and very playful.

Well, anyway, my girlfriend and I just moved into a new apartment together and she has a little alb multipoo (maltese/poodle), and I need some advice on getting the dogs acquainted with each other for living together. Needless to say, the little one has never had anything much in the way of rules and my girlfriend is very nervous that Izzy will see the little one as lunch. I'm not gonna lie, Izzy has given her some rather strange looks. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I know there isn't a lot of detail here, but I can fill in the blanks if anyone offers anything in the way of help. Thanks! I need these dogs to get along.

  • Welcome Greg. Its always best to get dogs acquainted outside their own territory. It looks as though they have already met. I hope there is no rush to get them together as it can take time. It all depends on the dogs. Take them for plenty of walks together, preferably long ones. I see they are the same sex. Are they neutered? What are their temperaments like? Do they normally get on with other dogs?

@annie In that case, Spice is already in the data base. Pam is always very quick to send me all their litter details. You can go and have fun tracing your pup right back through generations of well known Basenjis. Email me a photo with his registered name so I can embed it into his pedigree.

@jengosmonkey Thank you for sharing the memories and photo. Alas, the more special the dog, the greater the loss. Jengo was indeed one of a kind and may the flood of memories bring you solace.

@JaxxnBeer - go to this link http://www.ofa.org/dnatesting/kits.html and then on the left hand side where it says OFA/MU DNA Tests and scroll down to the one that says "Fanconi" and then to the one that say PRA (Basenji) - click on each one and you will go to the order page. Hope that helps. Does this mean that the Sire and Dam have not been tested?

Your boys are part of the reason I have basenjis! When I was researching the breed, I attended the Basenji Club of Northern California's Specialty Show and one of your boys spent nearly the entire show in my lap. After that day, I knew I would at some point bring home a basenji and the following spring, I did just that. Nicky, turned 14 years old this past December.

No confirmed plans, as of yet. But they should solidify with in the next few weeks. We have been thinking of "wintering" in Berlin until February. We also we'll be in Münich visiting some friends. I'm really excited to go, since there are so many more B's in Germany than Switzerland. In fact Lycia's father, C-Quest's Echo of Eldorado is there as well. =)
