Spencer Had a Stroke– a Bad One

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I am very sorry for your loss. Dogs bring so much happiness to our lives, but such sadness when they go. Only time will turn that keen edge of pain to happy memories, and good dogs leave many good memories. When you are ready, there will be another dog to love in Spencer's honour. Peace

  • I wanted to thank everyone again for your comforting words and gestures. It's wonderful of all of you to honor my sweet Spencer. I appreciate everything so much, and somewhere, Spencer is adding his baroo of gratitude.

He was greatly loved and is deeply missed.

  • I have not been on the forum for awhile and am sad to read about Spencer. I know how much you loved him and he is now free of pain.

We had a Dalmatian that started having these issues at the same age as your B. Vestibular disease got worse causing her to lose her balance and fall when walking, loss of strength in her hindquarters and incontinence. I am not aware of any treatments for the VD, but there are a number of human treatments for strokes that might be able to be used in dogs.

Lets hope it's vestibular disease which is preferable to a stroke. Hopefully with the treatment she will improve, sending get well vibes to Aries.

Both of mine came in again this year, but in my experience, if they are around another bitch basenji that is in season, it may bring the others in also. Mine showed no inclination to going into season, and yet, first one and then the other! They did go to a show where there was another bitch in season before this.

@agilebasenji: Sounds like you definately need a specialist of some sort. Also, you may want to try Slippery Elm instead of Immodium or Pepto. http://www.botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/e/elmsli09.html http://health.howstuffworks.com/slippery-elm-herbal-remedies.htm http://www.littlebigcat.com/index.php?action=library&act=show&item=slipperyelm **The last link is about using it in pets. And it should be available as a powder or in capsule form at your local health food/green grocery. Thanks for that link. Never heard of it used in pets before, but now I'll be keeping some on hand. Excellent!
