Good chew stuff for sensitive intestines?

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Both of our B's love to chew (rawhide, deer antler) but one of them, Binti, keeps getting diarrhea when she chews more than, say 5 minutes.
We want to let her chew more than that, to satisfy her instincts and to clean her teeth, but are not sure what to give.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

  • I don't give rawhides anymore, as I think they are dangerous. I went through some worrisome time when one of my girls got a piece lodged just before the opening to the stomach…...we were thinking we might have to have surgery, but it finally passed. Actual bones are good but messy, and you risk a chipped or broken tooth. I would also like suggestions. I have antler, but it doesn't interest him for very long.....

  • Bulky sticks are easily digestible versus rawhide…that's what I I've oak because he gets diarrhea on rawhide (plus I don't think it's safe) and antlers don't keep him interested for long

  • That is what I use, Bully Sticks…. and I have antlers around, they chew on them every now and again.....

  • Bully sticks are just baked rawhide. Antlers are tougher and the mniscule amounts of antler that can be chewed up in a day shouldn't rile up a sensitve tummy.

Have you tried "moo tubes"? They're bovine trachea and more digestible than skin, whether in rawhide or bully stick form.

As with any dog toy, check ountry of origin and avoid non-domestc produced.

Job wise, so far so good. We won't have a final notice until the week of the 5th. Fingers crossed they don't eliminate my position, although with 14 year under my belt I have enough seniority to bump someone else. I'd hate to do it but all districts are 'pinking'. There will be no openings in Illinois. Plus my district won't pay out accumulated sick days so I'd be giving up almost a year of retirement in sick pay alone. Fingers crossed. In the mean time, I'm enjoying my spring break, catching up on some reading, and watching my 2 beasts nap the day away on the sofa:). Looks good!! I might just join them:D.

Your dog suffered a similar injury, although not from ppoping, but that agrivated it. We had him on similar meds and it has been about a month now and he seems fine. No damage to his spine. Hope all goes well with your little Jet!

My vet told me I could give a whole benadryl tablet for his seasonal allergies. I sometimes give him half a tablet and hide it in some cream cheese. I boiled a chicken leg with some rice, carrots and green beans. His stool seems to be getting better since I gave him 1/2 an immodium last night.

Hi Ripley - Glad you're back and very happy that Ripley is getting better. She may have gotten an alergic reaction - seemingly. Off this topic and out of curiosity, how is Ripley doing with the crate training issue in a previous post. http://www.basenjiforums.com/showthread.php?t=215 I hope you'll let us know if any advice worked for you. :)
