Ian, New to Basenji Forums

Member Introductions
  • Hi, I'm Sam. My wife and I adopted Ian from the Norfolk, Virginia SCPA about 3 months ago. He was transferred from Baton Rouge where he was slated to be euthanized. We can't imagine that fate for this sweet, adorable puppy. Ian is, we think, a Basenji mix. Mixed with what we don't know. He is 8 1/2 months old now (he's a Christmas baby, or pretty close to being one). Ian is easy going, very friendly, and is extremely curious (about everything!). He easily passed a 6-week Puppy Training course. He is trainable, but becomes distracted easily when things are happening around him. The folks at the SCPA thought he was perhaps a pure Basenji, the barkless dog, since he never made a sound while he was there. However, he has found his voice. Even though he's quiet most of the time, he does bark, growl, and howl at times. The SCPA folks listed Ian as a "Hound Mix", which we're certain he is, but not 100% Basenji. Ian has very distinctive, equal markings on both sides, except for a white right front paw. He is constantly trying to dominate us in various ways, so we have to be on our toes all the time. Everyone who meets Ian falls in love with this happy, handsome boy.

@elbrant That's how all my 8-some learned to catch. If food dropped on the floor - you lost it ! So they all stood on their hind legs and it was like feeding a nest of fledgling sparrows. A gentle toss of the treat and someone caught it !

@JaxxnBeer - go to this link http://www.ofa.org/dnatesting/kits.html and then on the left hand side where it says OFA/MU DNA Tests and scroll down to the one that says "Fanconi" and then to the one that say PRA (Basenji) - click on each one and you will go to the order page. Hope that helps. Does this mean that the Sire and Dam have not been tested?

Hi Angie, She does look like a Brindle Basenji. Also i think Basenji's eyes look like they are wearing eyeliner. Hope you and your family are enjoying her and the many wonders of the Basenji breed.

He's a hungry dog today. Gave him 1/2 cup in the morning and just a few minutes ago. He had no problem eating. I'm much more happy that he's eating now. He likes his bone as well. Not too much into the Kong yet. I just wish he didn't cry in his crate when I put him in there. Feel bad for him but I know it just takes adjusting. He is perfectly fine when I return home after he's been in there awhile. It's just the initial time. To be honest though, this transition went far better than I expected. I was prepared for the worst. This little guy has done very well.
