Female, swollen vulva

    Yesterday, I noticed that my 9-year-old female has a rather swollen vulva and she's licking at it a bit–occasionally but not incessantly.

    • She doesn't seem sick or in pain in any way (eating, sleeping, peeing, pooping, etc. are all normal)
    • We've had very hot weather for the last 3-4 days (over 90 degrees)
    • I don't see anything in the area that looks like a rash, bug bites, or anything oozing, bleeding, or scabbed
    • She's not rubbing her bottom on the ground
    • She isn't on any medication, doesn't have any chronic conditions, and has always been very healthy

    She is spayed but I suppose that doesn't stop her from "coming into heat"--maybe that's what's going on? I haven't done anything to treat the swelling other than gently wash the area with cool water and make sure that she's drinking lots of water.

    Any thoughts?

    Please have her checked by a vet as she could have an infection. I had an elderly spayed female rescue who had stump pyometra which occurs in spayed females. She was spayed at a young age. She also had UTI problems. She made it though the surgery just fine.

    I would also have her checked for infection… they can get them. At lure trials at check in all girls are check for discharge, regardless of being spayed... many a male can mistake that for coming in season..... my males have....

    Is anyone in the house on female estrogen patches, creams or gels? If yes, this could be a side effect from her having contact with the hormones.

    Hi it's me Laura. Your Ziggy is my dog's father.
    Anyway please have your female checked. My Savannah (talker's niece) had stump pyrometa. She also was spayed 9 years before. She had a swollen vuvla and was licking. The vet thought it was a bad UTI bc antibiotics were not working. An ultra sound revealed that tissue left behind had bc seriously infected causing the pyrometa. Savannah had surgery but passed away almost two weeks after her surgery. The ultrasound reveal an enlarged liver and mass. She had cancer and it was aggressive.

    I believe her system was so compromised by the infection that she couldn't fight the cancer. She passed away on July 23.

    We miss her. Please get yours check ASAP.

    I believe this was a false alarm, something topical rather than illness.

    I gave her a long, cool bath yesterday, using a shampoo that "relieves itching associated with minor skin irritations, inflammation and rashes."
    She has completely stopped licking (anywhere on her body, not just under her tail). She seems much more relaxed and comfortable, compared to yesterday, even though we're dealing with 99-degree weather.
    When I check her labia, I don't see any redness, or any change. I can prod the area, and she doesn't show any sign of pain.

    I think that what I thought was swelling is just how the vulva looks in a healthy dog. I'll keep a watchful eye on her for the next few days to see if anything changes.

    @eeeefarm: Thanks for adding the overhead shots. Definitely not overweight…...she looks good! I am curious, however, about how judges react to Basenjis that are not within breed standard height and weight? This is not a criticism of your girl, just curiosity. Having been involved with horse breeders for some time, and also having watched what happens in other dog breeds when a particular trait becomes popular, I do wonder if judges will "reward" breeders for bringing off type (in this case, large) dogs to the ring? Selective breeding can make lots of changes without going outside a closed registry. (e.g. Arab horses with exaggerated flat croups and extreme dished faces, GSDs with increasing slope to their toplines, etc.) Judges judge what is in the ring on that day… since there is NO DQ for size and certainly they are not weighed... if they are over/under by an inch or so, no biggy. Basenjis over the years that I have shown, run the course... couple years bigger, couple of years smaller, rest of the time pretty much on the mark. The only time it really "sticks" out is if there is one very large and one very small in the ring at the same time.

    Our 17 year old starting having problems with leaking last year. Almost every time she slept she would wake up with a small wet spot in her bed or on the couch. Since she sleeps in bed with us this became a huge problem - washing the sheets every day got old REAL fast…but we couldn't bear to throw her out of bed! After several tests to rule out various problems, her doctor put her on Proin twice a day, and the leakage has pretty much disappeared. I honestly can't remember the last time we had to clean up a puddle! The problem NOW is getting her to take the medication since she absolutely will not chew up the tablet. After struggling for weeks we finally tried crushing the tablet and mixing it with her food, and this has worked perfectly.

    @CrazySenji: Elliot is thin and is so picky he's slowly killing me. We are doing kibble/wet in the AM and raw in the PM. Down for 10 minutes and gone til the next meal. Yesterday he skipped breakfast and ate all his dinner. Today he ate some breakfast and barely 1 bite of dinner. @________@ He likes it one day and hates it the next. Lovely little brat he is! I know how you feel, Becky. Just a year ago I was in that same position, begging a thin dog to eat. It's very worrisome and stressful. I hope Elliot gets over whatever it is and starts eating soon. I'm surprised that he doesn't like raw. Poor guy. :( @Chealsie508: The "little miss" is no longer little! Time flies…she is beautiful..love the expressions..looks like she telling you off under her breath in the first. Hard to believe, isn't it, Chealsie? She's all grown up… and yes, that's probably exactly what she's doing, saying, "Are YOU telling ME what to do?" Girl's got attitude, no doubt about it.

    @LovingLola: Thanks. I didn't know that they should see an opthamologist regularly. Yes, it is highly recommended, IMO for all breeds, but especially for ours that have eye problems. Like I said, once I have a base line that shows no problems, I don't have a problem with going every two years when in their prime. And it is not all that expensive at least not in the Bay Area and believe me, we are pretty pricey on Vet things….

    She still seeks out water but not to the degree that she was. As the accidents wane, I have been trying to leave the water out a bit more, but like one of the other members said about their husband, mine also is sick of cleaning up the pee so I have to find a happy medium between the two. All in all I think we are doing fine, and once again thanks for all of your concern. I will be sure to connect with the Basenji Forums again if there are any other questions.
