New California Law May Be Going Into Effect

Off Topic
  • I heard this morning on the radio that California is trying to pass a bill making it required that puppies and kittens by 4 mts of age must be spayed or neutered.
Nothing was mentioned about purebreds. Hhhmmmm.

  • That ought to be fun to regulate.

    Interesting.

It does include ALL dogs and cats. There is an exclusionery liscence you can buy for each dog that is involved in conformation showing or field trials, that you intend to breed…but most likely it will be more expensive than most breeders can afford.

If you live in California, I urge you to write your representatives and explain that this legislation will put an end to responsible breeders.

    Oah My GOD!!!
I wondered what that ment for breeders. I had a funny feeling when I heard about this today. They said All dogs and cats.

Another tax in California. Its not like we don't have enough already :(

  • And not only is it expensive, it doesn't protect small breeders as we are not a business… however, nicely covers the BYB and PM's that sell to pet shops or over the internet.... as they are a business. In my town, I couldn't get one even if I wanted to.... we are zoned residential, not business....
And like KY it doesn't cover "visiting" dogs/cats that come into the state for events....

So, Pat….if you had your own business, like a craft or something (dog training?) you couldn't have the address of the business be your home address?

I hadn't realized that there was this kind of exclusion even if small, responsible breeders could afford it.

The ridiculous part is that the people who are currently pumping out the majority of pets that fill the shelters, aren't likely to abide by the new law, or even know about it. The only ones that will comply are those that have ethics enough to not promote pet overpopulation to begin with.

  • The problem in my town is there is a residential limit on the number of dogs without a permit for a "kennel" which is business….. so while I might be able to have the address, I couldn't keep more then 3 Basenjis legally... so caught between a rock and a hard place..

Also, the proposed law at this point says the towns/city's.. etc can determine what is "acceptable" reason for keeping a dog/bitch in tact..... it is a mess all the way around and with the support of PETA and SPCA... yikeslll

  • I hope everybody recognizes that there are shelters all over the country that have to IMPORT dogs from the southern US to be able to fill the need for adoptable dogs in their areas. In some populus areas of the US we have done SUCH a good job at promoting spay and neuter, and adoption that the only dogs that coming into the shelter are dogs that are unsuitable for adoption in some way (usually aggression).

Apparently the south is still way overpopulated with nice, adoptable dogs…;) so they pipe them up north. In urban areas, the dogs that are filling the shelters are being confiscated from dog fighting rings, and other terrible, terrible situations. Not exactly the perfect dogs for a family that just wants a nice pet.

Wouldn't it be great to address the actual problem, rather than punishing anyone who dreams of breeding nice, healthy pets.....

  • For anyone unaware of this bill please check the AKC website for information, http://www.akc.org/canine_legislation/CA_action_center.cfm

It is very important that California residents write their assembly member expressing their opposition to this bill. This bill will hurt responsible breeders who do more work than I think most people know. Many are active in educational outreach about responsible pet ownership and support and are active in rescue. This bill would severely damage the infrastructure of responsible pet ownership.

@Janneke: A smart thing to do! I'm also thinking about a kennel name, but I first want a female at home.. It's pretty expensive to register a name  In Sweden it cost about 250 Euro to register the name. I got my name from the 1/12 2010 so its not that old. But it has taken over a year to get it approved by both FCI and SKK (Swedish kennel club).

@MacPack: I recommend rubber-backed area rugs, or you will find them all in a pile against the wall as they skid along….. Anne And watch them closely. After 3 yrs w/Jazzy and 11 mos w/Keoki, they suddenly decided to eat an area rug. Okay, not exactly "eat" it, but they certainly ruined it in a big way. Why? Why? after all that time?  Because they are Basenjis.:p
