TX-Houston-Female PB Pups-1 Tri & 1 Black & White F-In Rescue

Basenji Rescue
  • These pups are 11 weeks old.

I have not contacted the rescue to see if they are still available.

    Here is their Petfinder page:

  • This one has been up for a while. I finally took the plunge and inquired about them just a couple days ago. This is the response I got:

"The Black and white girl is the only one I have left at this point.
The guy with the Mother dog bred her to a neighbors male Basenji against his
wife's wishes. When the pups were about 4 1/2 weeks old she threatened to
take the babies to the pound. They were too messy. He called me and I took
them in here. I met the Female she was a brindle and she was definitely a
Basenji. The neighbor with the male kept one of the pups. Never met the male
but was told he was a tri colored male.
Only other Basenji proof I have is that my 3 year old female Basenji adopted
the litter and has been taking care of them since they have been allowed out
with the rest of the dogs. :)"

  • How sad is that, thank goodness for the person that took them… and yes.. at 4 weeks they get MESSY!.... The one Tri, look to me like a Trindle instead of a clear Tri. And that would make sense since if the mother was Brindle.

  • I thought the same thing- trindle!
And yes, so sad…people are really just stupid...simply put

  • I would have suggested the low cost spay/neuter clinic for the dam-only $65 and for the sire only $50 if both are under 30 lbs.! I am glad they were not taken to the shelter-high kill rates in Houston.

I'm so glad that those girls ended up with such a good home, lucky them, and lucky you too! I really like the dark brindle one, I'd inquired about her, so I'm happy you have her. Now I know where she is. @avdpierre: Now I just need to find names….their names are Shotgun (not a girls name) and Bella. I would really like African names. My last B was Sundiata Ngoma Kibushi. He was the best B ever! I like the name Shotgun, though it may be better suited for a sporting dog, and as for it not being a girl's name, who sez? If it were me, I'd be keeping the name Shotgun, Bella? that would be the name I'd be changing.

I am glad this boy is going to BRAT! I hope he is still socialized even after being kenneled that long. I do not understand why non specific breed rescues take in dogs and then leave them kenneled for months! I understand temporary kenneling until one can find a foster home but for months. I have read about this happening too many times and I did not realize how often this occurs. I monitor the Urgent Part 2-Urgent Death Row Dogs Facebook page which monitors the NYCACC shelters and I have seen dogs posted on its site where a dog has been rescued from the shelter and then sits in a kennel for months. I know people want to save dogs but it is expensive for kenneling and this is how rescues become hoarders! There is also an all breed rescue group in IN that solicits funds to pay for boarding. 10 in basenji years is not too old - Digital's best year ever as an agility comeptitor was as a 10 year old. This little girl could still give someone the best years of her life.

I am not sure if the SPCA even works with rescues but it would be good to give a contact in case she gets returned or if the new owners have any problems with her.
