    Willow got spayed last Friday and on Saturday when I picked her up, her stool was pretty runny. I chalked it up to stress. By Monday, it was pure liquid and mucous. Her brother, Kai, also started down the diarrhea path on Sunday, so it seemed pretty clear that it was more than just an emotional thing.

    I was figuring giardia, as was the vet. She started both on flagyl presumptively and sent the stool samples off yesterday. Today I took Willow for her recheck after the spay and it turns out they have coccidia.

    Since I am an infectious disease epidemiologist, I kept turning this over and over in my mind. Then it struck me - a couple of weeks ago we were at my dad's house. He has an amazing 3.5-acre yard that is totally fenced in and we took the dogs to run their little curly tails off. The only drawback is that in his neighborhood, several years back, someone must have released a pair of peas, because now the place is infested with them. They particularly love dad's house. They are beautiful, but peas mean lots and lots of pea**** poop.

    I had no idea pea**** poop was such a delicacy among our discriminating hounds. I couldn't keep them out of it, as it is all over the yard. Anyway, that is my guess as to the source of the coccidia. What do you guys think?

    Does anyone have any advice for how to stop the poop eating? I have read about goose poop also being high on the list of culinary favorites. (BTW, has anyone's B gotten sick after eating goose poop?)

    At home, they really do have "drop it" and "leave it" down, but there it was like it was a challenge to eat as much poop as possible and run away to find more, getting increasingly frantic as I tried to make them stop.

    This will bum me out to lose such an amazing space for them to play, but I cannot imagine how to clean up pea**** poop on a huge lot like that. Any ideas are welcome.

    My inlaws yorkie is always getting sick from guinea hen poop. Just have to keep them on a leash.

    Yep Goose Poop just seems to draw both of ours to it like a magnet. Of course we do everything we can to discourage them from consuming it, and neither one has gotten ill from goose poop. We also noticed as our puppies aged it seemed to be less of an issue.

    Oakley will Indulge in both the eating of and rolling around in of poop…mainly horse or cow...we've yet to encounter a bird or cat poop situation...The sickos!

When Ava was vaccinated last year, her vet didn't have the 3-year DHPP. Hopefully, she won't need to be vaccinated again. Legally, you don't have to give anything but rabies. And legally it has to say 3 years to be "legal" for 3 yrs. As for the rest, I have every 3 yrs until the dog is old. I give no vaccines after about 7 years old unless there is some new outbreak. Generally, a dog that is healthy is fully immunized by adulthood. If they have autoimmune issues, vaccinations won't help and may make worse. So recommended, don't recommend, when it isn't the law, you get to do what is best for your dogs.

    @gigi See, we're adults! We found an agreed upon thing, for I an cranky. I am too tired to find it, but I recall that giving less than a full dose may not be legal if the dog bites

    There are already USDA kennel inspectors. But they are overworked and ineffective, as they confess in a May 2010 audit they conducted of their own operations (available here as a lengthy .pdf entitled "Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Animal Care Program Inspections of Problematic Dealers" warning: graphic photos in document). Inspection reports are all publicly accessible via the APHIS database in the link Patty provided above: http://acissearch.aphis.usda.gov/LPASearch/faces/CustomerSearch.jspx If you use that link, you'll see that Thunder Ridge Kennel in Iowa was officially inspected five times (at least, on record). There was always at least one "indirect" violation on record. On the day 3/15/2010, which I believe is the day that Iowa rescue groups came to take his animals, the USDA inspector found 21 violations in a report that goes on for 10 pages. Charges ranged from "excessively dirty" food receptacles to "minimal enclosure spacing" (and since USDA regulations don't require very much room to begin with, this is saying something!), to having bug-infested facilities. It apparently takes a lot to shut down a puppy mill, especially when violations are either undocumented or usually amount to a slap on the wrist. We are already funding these federal government agencies, and their actions are, theoretically, available for public viewing. I think the APHIS database is a step in the right direction for the sake of transparency, and I am glad that they took the initiative to conduct a self-audit. However, I would also like to see proactive steps taken to ensure that the appropriate agencies are actually doing their jobs. Whistleblower assistance certainly seems to be called for when the local authorities appear to have difficulty monitoring everything within their own jurisdictions. I do find it hard to believe that the physical relocation of a puppy mill housing 100+ dogs would go unnoticed by local authorities. The community, as "concerned" has demonstrated, is more than willing to mobilize to eliminate what they don't want – and I firmly believe that most people don't want puppy mill dogs, they just may not know about them. So kudos to the citizens of Paola for knowing, and for taking a stand on their own front. Meanwhile, I have reported Rock Creek Kennel's Facebook profile for violating their own terms of service in that a) personal profiles are supposed to be attached to real names, and b) registered sex offenders are not permitted to have Facebook accounts. I have received no response from Facebook. If you would also like to report the profile, the place to do so is here. I have also forwarded this information, including this thread, to the Kansas Bureau of Investigations. (I hope that moderators/admins will keep this thread available, at least long enough to enable investigation and to keep a public record of where this kennel has been.) I received a pretty quick and helpful response from a Kansas state officer who said that the information was being passed onto the Sheriff's offices of the two Kansas counties where Harold Buzz Powell has been noted to reside. However, sex offender registry and the Dept. of Agriculture are typically separate entities, and need to deal with him separately. Anyway, the ball is in their court, and I hope to hear of a decisive resolution.

    @lvoss: The Panacur that I use is a powder so it is meant to go on the food. Mine are not picky eaters so have no problem with them eating their dinner with the panacur on it. I have been feeding homecooked dinners for them since late June. Thanks! It is good to know that it's a powder - it may not go over well with her. I'm willing to try though if the vet will let me.

    Your dog suffered a similar injury, although not from ppoping, but that agrivated it. We had him on similar meds and it has been about a month now and he seems fine. No damage to his spine. Hope all goes well with your little Jet!
